Just out of curiousity, if someone knew something that was pretty big news (front page stuff), but had no evidence, and no way of getting it, is there a way that they can tip off journalists?
An anonymous comment line for example?

Just curious, they must have something:)

Simple: Ring Newsroom, ask to speak to a reporter (or named reporter) give info, off the record, elaborate if possible, and put the phone down.

If you knew something really bad, but had no evidence yourself (or knew where the evidence was but couldn't get it), could you not tip them off and then they would investigate?

Have you worked in media? I've worked for three newspapers and none of them has ever paid for a story.

I do. and before I worked in it I have tipped off reporters about stories and been rewarded.

If you've got an "exclusive" (not nescessarily a big flashy item, but something nobody outside an organisation would know about... i.e. if you're an insider) papers will pay you a bit, price would depend on how 'exclusive', especially tabloids with celeb or crime stories or biz papers on poor business practice stories.

    Just out of interest....

How can you know something without having any evidence?

well if it was going to eventually be possible to get evidence to support a claim (tip of) you were going to supply a paper, then the paper would pay, if the story could be run legally in the end.

Even if you did have evidence the paper would still be obliged to investigate it, no matter what you supplied them with or the lawyers wouldnt allow them to run it.

Person supplies the tip off, paper provides the evidence basically.
