Being an avid Animal lover ;) heres my views.

#1 Lovely expression but that carpet is awful. :p

#2 Too false, kinda like a postcard or from a book, not diy enough.

    #3 Interesting!

#4 I love this one, what Lens did you use, Macro?

    #5 Bit better than #2

#6 Gorgeous and a big aaaahhhhh!

#7 Like #2 just too much like a postcard, too much like a print etc.

#8 Gorgeous, maybe the Grass a bit too tampered with, if it was of course!

#9 Nose and tongue came out a treat.

#10 Fantastic, love the teeth happiness snarl

#11 Not a fan of that pose, but it's better then #9

    @ #1 - Tell my mother that :D:D

@ #4 - I'm only using a compact, I switched it onto the macro setting and was seeing just how close I could get while still keeping the photo in focus. Can't wait for my Nikon D40 soon enough you will not be able to keep me away from this forum :D

@ #8 - The grass actually has not been touched, it came off the camera like that.

Thanks for spending the time to comment on them all! :)

Maybe that would explain the ones I thought were too much like prints! A dslr session with your Dog will def be worth waiting for, can't wait!

Jake looks like a real sweetheart, with a nice calm temperament. he obviously doesn't have any problem with staying still long enough to be photographed. He is a handsome boy.

Either from a rescue or a reputable breeder.

    Definitely not from donedeal.ie

Pets Ireland has a section on rehoming rescue dogs and dogs from private owners, or try the many rescues around the country.

If you'd prefer a puppy from known parents etc there's nothing wrong with that either, just do the research and find a good breeder. In the Animals and Pet Issues section of the boards.ie forums there's loads of good advice - here;s a list of breeders which would be a starting point to call up the secretary and get a more comprehensive list. These breeders will all be listed with the IKC (Irish Kennel Club) which is a small minimum as to what a good breeder should have done. Of course very reputable breeders may even have a huge waiting list for puppies, and they would not be advertising on websites such as donedeal.ie. A good breeder should ask you lots of questions, should have all breeding dogs and bitches hip scored (hips are a problem with GSD's), and should have a contract set out that allows for the return of the puppy to the breeder if anything goes wrong.

If you need any more detailed advice PM me, I am happy to help :)

I love the photo of him with the flowers in the background. :D

Sorry to go off topic, but what are GSD like? My cat is getting old now and probably won't be with us for very long so we're thinking of getting a dog. I want a GSD but my mother is concerned that it might be too much of an agressive dog. I think I'll show her these photos lol. :)

Yeah what's the story with them? Are they still bread for attack/guard dog duty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 861 ✭✭✭deaddonkey

you can buy a pup bred with an aggressive "drive" - this will give you a dog that will be friendly but willing to protect you/property when needed. mostly the sight of a german shepherd discourages anyone from trying anything stupid though

or you can buy a dog that's been bred to be more laid back and an easier to handle family pet

both will be good dogs, depending what you want

mine is the latter, she's nervous and afraid of loud noises and other dogs.

generally, any well socialised shepherd will be a very friendly animal - raise them right and they're amazing dogs. i love them.

Any German Shepherd will be a good guard dog, they are very loyal and intelligent and are quite protective of their families. The problem with the back yard breeders dogs is that they tend to have bad temperaments, tend to have bad nerves and this is always dangerous in such a large and protective breed of dog, as it can lead to fear biting.

I got Jake outside the country, he is from working lines German Shepherds used by the police force. He has high high drive and is quite confident and dominant. This is mainly only a dog that the police would value but when training obedience and Schutzhund (which we are starting back into soon :D ) a good confident high drive dog is great. Now I have socialised him extensively as a puppy and he is great around all people and other dogs. He never goes offlead around young children as he will chase them - not hurt them - but scare them. If you look for a good breeder he/she will be able to identify the calmer, quieter puppy suited to a family home.

Apart from this, they are super friendly and confident, extremely nosey (Jake has his nose in everything), highly intelligent and trainable, and they bond to a family very closely. Jake will refuse flat out to go into the garden without me, he'd prefer to just lay by me.

Gorilla - You can show your mum these photos of my aggressive dog... :D

I showed my mother the photos of Jake with the budgie and all was well....then however I showed her the photos of him with the cows and she immeadiately mentioned the muzzle! :(

I think shes detemined not to have a dog.

That looks like a Halti to me not a muzzle. I use one on my dog when walking him as you have better control of him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 301 ✭✭michelleans

It is a Halti, they are designed to stop dogs pulling. When the dog pulls, the strap tightens around the muzzle of the dog and closes their mouth. It's also easier to control them as you can steer them around easier by their noses.

The "restricted breed" list includes German Shepherds here in Ireland, the law states that these dogs must be leashed and muzzled in public at all times. The local dog warden in Limerick told me it was adequate to have the halti on Jake as he is so friendly and not in any way aggressive. Thus I use it in public, but Jake wears it only for that reason. He does not pull, nor is he aggressive, pity Ireland has such stupid laws..
