    Hey Guys,

I am in 2nd Comm and to be honest this year has been a joke. Literally went to about 6 lectures all year, failed 3 exams at xmas, repeating them now and all that blah. I have my reasons for the mess though but there not important.

My question is, I want to do Banking anf Finance as my specialisation but apparently ya need a first or it isnt worth a crap.

Is it possible to redo the whole year, all subjects from top to bottom without academic penalties and all that? If so how? and what are the costs involved?

Any other suggestions would be welcome too?

    cheers in advance

My advice: academics ain't for you. Get a job.

/edit: maybe that's bit harsh. Are you interested in your course? Any reason you couldn't care to spend a few hours a week going to lectures, at least in the harder subjects?

You'll have to pay full fees to repeat a year, I don't know what penalties are imposed. If you're going to do it, get your act together.

ha, I am waiting with baited breadth for the high horseriders? I have my reasons for second year being the way it was. In fact my first year GPA was 3.2 which as Im told is quite good.

Now Im trying to "get myself sorted". Thats why Im asking here.

without trying to sound like a smart ass just start to do some fuc%ing work! you'r emore than capable to do all of the subjects in BComm no doubt, you're selling yourself way short at the moment.
You would be better to go into the admin building to Claire Cahill or someone liek that and ask them could you repeat the year, and explain your story. Does 2nd year count towards your degree?
Also a high 2.1 in Banking in Finance is fine, so long as you interview well.

Having a bad year in second year isn't the worst anyway.

Yes it counts towards your degree, but it's 30%, next year is a lot more and working your ass off next year would help you ALOT and you'd still be able to sort it out.

I'd recommend you go talk to your student advisor though, Kieran Moloney. They're all really helpful and they'd be able to help you with this, as well as anything else going on seeing as you said this year went astray for other reasons. You could also talk to the SU education officer, Ronan Shanahan.

Most important thing to do is sit down and focus on the exams you have coming up, at the end of the day, even if you try sorting it out now, you won't have it all sorted until after the exam period so maybe you'd be better off sitting the exams, not worrying about this and giving the study a good run for it's money. At the end of the day, it may not work out and you may have to stick with the results you have.

    Hope that helps.

So, try the exams and possibly screw your final degree or resit the year? I know plenty of guys who have repeated years successfully, and if your attendance and work is as posted, I'd recommend it as you'll be seriously struggling in the next year without a foundation to build on. You will incur fees however. Steph's advice is best, go and have a chat with the pros on your options.

Before any of that though you need to make a choice between the other thing you're doing and your degree. I had a couple of friends crash and burn with the same problem, they have dropped out now. The time it takes along with the practice and concentration are just not compatible with lectures and study.

If you are really deadly serious about the other, drop out and pursue it as a career, if not put it on hold until you're finished in college or at least close to finishing with the work put in.

I did the Bcomm and specialised in Banking and Finance last year. I now work in the financial sector. Though I was under the old system it was (unlike other schools) very similar to the new system.

If you want one of the very high end jobs e.g. investment banking then you probably will need a first, and your ability to get a first will be effected by your year 2 results since they are weighted at 30% of your degree.
However there are other routes to these jobs such as experience, post graduate studies and profesional qualifications (the CFAs).

NB I was hired for my current position, as are many many people, on the basis of my expected results i.e the trend evident from my first year, second year and first semester of third year results.

However, most jobs that will not require a first. That should be obvious since <10% of people gets firsts AFAIK.
The B&F mode in UCD is very well regarded on the financial sector.

Now if the question is will you be able to handle B&F if you under perform in second year? Yes. Though doing well at finance would help as would Fin Acc 2 if you intend on doing Fin Acc 3 (which is good as you will then be exempt from Fin Acc at CAP1 if you do the ICAI exams).

I hope that helps. Id be happy to answer other questions for you.
