From what I have heard people doing Elec more than Mech tend to go in to that field, although its not unheard of Building Services/M&E (I looked into it) or Mech to go into it. Elec according to lecturers & people in industry (most were in Elec) have a much more extensive grounding in Controls than the one year I have had in it. Some of the employers will give training for grads as long as they have a qualification deemed acceptable.

There is a MSc in Reading in Intelligent Buildings that would be a useful conversion type course. Its not cheap tho.

Students who do most electrical engineering degrees will either specialise in Control engineering or Power engineering....

Although in saying that most electrical engineers who go to work in controls, really end up mainly doing automation type work. Most of the theoretical control system stuff isn't used that much in automation.

Its a bit of a different mindset from Mech to control.
I'm working as a CS Engineer and got my degree in electrical.
    Have you thought about instrumentation?
