WIT Library gone beyond a joke!

    hi all,

I have been a student in WIT for four years now, and I go to the library quite often to get study and work done.

I have noticed in the past few months, the lack of respect for the library conduct of code is unbelievable.

I was studying in the library an hour ago, there were people on mobile phones, girls having a huge conversation loudly, and people eating and make so much noise i.e. crisp bag. I tell them to be quiet but they start all over again 2 minutes later.

I don't think people should be allowed to use laptops in the study areas, I think they should be used on the top floor.

In the past 2 hours, there has been 5 announcements to tell students to respect other people and not make noise.

I thought the library was a quite place to study? Anyone noticing it aswell?

Its always noisy and gets worse during the exams. Complaints are often made but the rules are never properly enforced.

Hold on there now for a second, I too am a very frequent library user and just because i am a computing student and have the necessity to need a laptop with me at most times i should be forced up to the top floor. Where is the sense in that? What are the people with laptops doing wrong? They take up the same amount of space. I use my laptop when i am doing reports or programming or studying from webct in the library the whole time and i damn sure don't disrespect anyones right to learn. Alot of my friends bring in their laptops too and they don't disrespect the rules either. You're blatant attack on laptop user has no basis and should not even be listened to in my opinion. I still require quietness and respect when in the library on my laptop so why should i be forced up to the top floor to where the more "casual" students study stupid idea imho.

Now with regard to general conduct it is indeed an absolute joke in the library lately but it is no new occurence. Yesterday i was sitting near two girls having a full blown conversation, they were complained about to the staff a porter came down told them to talk outside and nothing else was said and they continued to talk for another good hour, all whilst i was working on my laptop quietly :) The students should indeed have a bit more cop on with regard to respect but the staff in the library are not actively enforcing any ruling on the situation. WOOOOOOWWWWW a public service announement i better stop talking now! do they really think that will work. They need to get real if you ask me and start telling people individually to shut up or get out!

I agree completely that at present the library situation is a farce.

All it takes to get the message about keeping the noise down across is for a few people each day be made an example out of by being marched out. Why they arent doing anything about it i don't know. Unfortuently this time of year brings a lot of fair weather students out n' about!:D

At present having a porter sitting there all day oblivious to whats going on,is a waste of time and money.

I am a computing student aswell, BSc IT. I bring my laptop all the time in there because the IT building either has classes or is full, and D01 is packed.

but the reason for my comment was, that I get dirty looks all the time in the library in the basement and middle floor, dont know y, maybe due to my laptop, I know there is plugs there and everything, but maybe me clicking or something puts them off I dont know,

I am always in the top floor because the PCs that are there, never work:D

This type of issue is best brought to the attention of your class rep if your concerned about it, who can then pass on the issue to the Students Union on your behalf who might be able to do something about it. :)

People should be marched out or asked to leave in front of the entire population of the library, Observing the embarrassment of a few students being made example of will surely be effective in reducing the noise levels of the library at present.

Also chikuu, upstairs sure is grand if you need space but it really is just a big chatroom for the "fair weather2 students sitting there aimlessly all day, kidding themselves that they are studying, when in all honestly they spend the day talking in groups. Upstairs is extremely noisy and definitely not someplace i would sit down in.

With regard to the strange looks. They can go take a flying duck lol... The library i will give them this realised more students were studying in the basement using laptops so this year provided power sources on the majority of desks. The IT building is always packed with the daily bebo possy which would be avoided if the networking administration in the college could manage to properly ban a site. About 50% of students in the IT building sitting at computers during free classes are either on bebo or youtube.D01 is always packed as is DO4.There are other places where good computers are available though.

Who exactly is in charge of the noise levels and all that in the library? Is it the porters or the staff! Cos whoever it is needs to pull their socks up!

I haven't received any strange looks when using my laptop in the library. The only time when I can think of laptops disturbing the peace is when people login forgetting they have their sound up full blast! Interestingly, Vista seems to be the OS of choice for those who forget to turn off their sound!

I'm able to study efficiently in less than ideal environments so the infrequent chattering that goes on doesn't phase me in the slightest.

With regard to laptops i don't see any obvious problem with them. If library PC's were of a decent enough standard there would'ent be the need for half of them anyway.

I take your point Sully but surely the SU should take a more pro-active role and take the finger out so to speak. Sorry Sully, but from expierience asking the SU to get involved is about as useful as asking my dog not to bark...just doesent work to be honest. Have no SU members been inside the library in the past month?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 24,056 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sully

The SU wouldn't be studying so they are probably oblivious to the matter, unless some of the reps are in there but never said anything to them. To be fair to the SU, I think they have done a lot for students. At least, this group has anyway.

Anyway, if you cant complain to a porter or staff member and you feel you cant complain to SU - who can you complain to? Lecturers or Course Heads probably dont care or cant do very much!

We (the student population of the library who actually want to study) need to get back that staff member that was "scary". Remember the guy who would come down and literally take a cup of tea out of your hand and pour it out the window. The guy who used to walk through the aisle every hour or so and everyone would go quiet.

    Bring back scary guy!:D

Compared to college st library the main college is a palace. In college street the library is tiny even with the new study room the place still fills up quickly and its so cramped its impossible to walk past seats without banging into people. In fairness ppl dont seem to chat much in there but its impossible to try study when they have a printer which is in constant demand about two feet away from the study desks.....place is a total joke like

Printers in WIT are dodgy and the library is becoming a right pain!

I graduated 5 years ago, it was always like that in the old library and even in the new one.

Imo it's ridiculous, I complained a lot when I was there but they did nothing about it. You could hear the receptions chatting, their phone ringing and the security scanner beeping the whole time in there.

I was in WIT for BSc Bio for 2002-2006 and thought the library was great at beginning of term in first year. When the christmas/summer exams began to loom, the library went to hell. Not just busy, but loads of looneys just in there messing around and talking.

Its the same in UCD here, library space is at a premium, although the library rules are enforced very harshly. I suppose that can only be a good thing. In WIT, we used our phones in stairwells, never in open areas! Although it did get worse as the years went by.

Does WIT need a new extra library?
Or a bunch of smaller (subject-focussed) libraries in individual departments?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 24,056 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sully

The library isnt to bad space wise, the problem is lack of enforcement of the rules. Not many take calls outside of the starewell but they do have chats and joke about to the annoyance of a lot of others. The library staff dont seem to act much on it either. Its mainly during the busy season that it gets out of control. :)

Its also a mess in there. Seems that from my observations and i have spent unbelievable hours in there in the last month or so with projects and study that all that is being cleaned is the front downstairs and the bottom back study area is being neglected apart from bottles being taken from desktops.... thought it would be kept better to be honest when people would want to study in comfort instead of floors covered in mushed chocolate. A quick trip to the bottom back study area in the next fewe days will validate my argurment..

It could be worse... you could be forced to use the toilets in the library! Talk about dirty, can people not go to the toilet without missing the toilet bowl? Can the cleaners not take that bit more regular trips and keep it somewat clean? Between the toilets being full because its a bitch to flush it, and those "tripple willy" holders for toilet paper which can be a bitch to get working - avoid at all costs imo. :p (*/rant*)

I haven't noticed a major cleaning problem in the library itself, and I spend a few hours each day there in the last few months.

Yeah well it has only been a problem as of lately in the library. Since the studying for all the fair weather students who only use the library around exam times unlike some of us who use it all year round... Its just the influx of these students who litter the place that is making it a dirty environment to study in... I thought the cleaning staff would be a bit more frequent and active in their duties around this time of year :)

Toilets in the library? You'd even go in there?:)

Fair weather students? Surely you mean non-thick people?

Some courses require students to study all year round, in others it is possible to get top marks if you work hard for the month before the exams

No i mean all the students who don't make an effort to enter the library on a regular basis during the semesters and then show up in the last week or two and rudely talk away for hours with their friends to their hearts content not giving a flying f**k about the other people stressing out in the library. Whatever about the quick two minute chat in the library where it only happens for two minutes ever hour or so, that can be overlooked but to sit there for hours on end actually talking in a normal voice is completely disrespectful. To be fair all courses require round the year external study so there is no excuse for an influx of students just because the exams loom close.

The library is busy but is more hectic towards the end of the year as people start to make use of it because of assignments and study. I wouldnt put them in the "couldnt care less" catagorie. Some subjects require study all year around to get decent grads and others you can do it fine within a few months. It depends on the student, the work put in and the subject. Im not to sure if that was what was implied by dan tho.

I'm quite surprised the college actually let Leaving Cert students in to study as well, given that it's already a busy time...
I know loads of guys going out there everyday to study...

Sure they don't check for ID. Its effectively a public library apart from you cant use the facilities without a WITCard.

What i meant was a dig at the people who i know for a fact didnt use the library all year around except for a week or two before the exams and yet they talk away constantly and ignore respective rules and also fail to respect the right to quiet study for their student peers. Sorry it just pi$$es me off summit special...
