I'd imagine the key fob will be cheap enough but think that you will need a dealer to program the key to work with the car's immobiliser. That may well be costlier.

Not so hard to program it yourself - http://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc13.shtml

Cleggs in Rathmines cut the key for me for €10.

Make sure that you buy the correct key, it should have a code on the side.

the details in that link will program the remote locking but not the immobiliser. As far as I am aware dealers will not code a key that they did not sell so you would want to check that first. Some specialists can code them too.

As far as I'm aware, this is correct. There is a computer called VAGCOM used on VAG cars to program and run diagnostics. This is needed to add a new key to deactivate the immobilser.

Most of the keys on eBay appear to be refurbished rather than new. I bought a 2003 A2 for my wife and had it up in Agnews in Belfast for a service. Both the keys work, but are a bit worse for wear. They quoted me £140 for a new key and £80 to program it. That was before VAT. No thanks:(
