Marathon training - Peaking too early

Hi There, I'm currently training to step up to a marathon. My long run at the weekend was 17 miles, so I guess I'd be somewhere around 9 weeks off the end of a marathon training schedule.

Problem is: The next marathon after I complete those 9 weeks, isn't until the 24th August, which is 16 weeks away (I didn't plan this very well). So just wondering if you experienced marathon runners have any opinions: Should I step back the training program, to have it finish just before next race (Longford), or continue in the same vein, and be marathon-ready for an extra 6 weeks (and try to do some shorter races in between? I'm just a little concerned about keeping up motivation levels.

Also, please correct me if I am wrong, but there there aren't any other Marathons between Cork (June) and Longford (August), right?

So, did you start a marathon training plan with no marathon?

I would suggest working things out to get you to your first 20 mile run, then step back the training for a few weeks, but then build back up to a 18-20 mile run again. That way you could do one 18-20 mile run per month and then taper off in line with whatever plan you are following.

No, not really. I was training for the half marathon, and have been lengthening my long runs since completing the half, at the start of April (Connemarathon). But my training regime has not been dis-similar to a marathon program.

I'd say use the extra time to work on a good base mileage. Limit your long runs to about 16 miles for a few weeks then when the marathon training plan catches up with you carry on as you were.
