Whenever i start my laptop it takes about 20 minutes for the startup menu to appear (and desktop icons). in the meantime i can access programmes via the task manager and then after ive say been on the net 20 minutes or so the start menu then appears.

anyone any idea on whats gone wrong?

    Cheers

is the pc experiencing slowdown when accessing program through task manager?
does the issue happen in safe mode?
how many start up/service programs do you have going?

use the steps in the sticky for malware removal
    try a disc defragment,
    run a disc error check,

thats what i'd try before the give up and reinstall,
the real tech heads may give you better advice :0

Does sound like Malware/Virus problems alright as these can be what is causing Explorer.exe to be slow to load, which is why you can't see your taskbar, icons, start menu.

if nothing major has changed recently then system restore

if the hard drive is making funny noises then use hddtune or the manufacturers diags to make sure it's ok

try a windows update too while at it

From the task manager try running explorer.exe to see it pops up earlier - alternative end task on it and start manually to see if different

ye olde safe mode is good too, boot up let it settle down and reboot - also best place to do system restore from.
