I hope their selection of music is better. I was with them before, and it was spectacularly bad. I really couldn't find 30 songs to download one month and gave up.
Edited to say its a good call for the free tunes, but not worth signing up to after that, IMO.

Most of these sites deal in waterley stuff that you never heard of before.

I am with them for years and more than happy. It is mainly indie music but plenty metal, country etc too.
Big recent releases on it include

    Aphex Twin, Laura Cantrell
    James Taylor, The Raconteurs
    Boards Of Canada, Vampire Weekend
    Billy Bragg .....

    Nothing is really for free...

Have to provide credit card details - **** that !

Only thing is, it's easy to cancel with them. Does putting in a bogus credit card number work with them?

I did the free trial and then cancelled it today. Dead easy, just a couple of clicks.
Got some old stuff I have on album but the only new thing that tickled my fancy was the Raconteurs. I wouldn't have paid for the album, but grand asa freebie.

I was impressed with their Audiobook selection though. I'd consider signing up for that only, in the future.

I've been using emusic for years, they have the best selection of independent music on the planet. They are trustworthy (2nd biggest online music retailer after iTunes) so don't worry about giving your CC number, you can cancel the subscription before they start to charge you. Highly recommended for fans of jazz and classical music, and independent music in any other genre. You won't find any music from the "big 4" (i.e. most chart/pop music), its geared towards an older audience I guess.

Edit: just noticed this thread is really old so that offer aint valid any more... but as an emusic member I get 50 free tracks for anyone I invite to sign up, and they get 50 free tracks too. So if anyone wants an invite let me know... Terms & Conditions are here: http://www.emusic.com/taf/rules.html

They are still doing the offer in a general sense. You get 1 free book and 25 free tracks if you sign up just through their site.

But if you can get more if you use an offer page via a partner/advertiser.

    For eg: 50 using Xfm
    http://www.xfm.co.uk/artists/downloads/emusic-downloads

    And 35 using Lovefilm
    http://www.emusic.com/lovefilm

But I am not sure if that one works outside the UK.
