Starting tomorrow but considering I've skipped about 70% of lectures, including a module I've never even been to once, it's hard to be optimistic. That said, I took the same approach in first semester, and I did quite well...

And is it true that if you have to repeat an exam in the summer its only worth 80/85%? If this is ture its such crap, I mean a student fails an exam and they make the repeats even harder for them to pass!!

"Epic fail" and a B grade don't really compute...

Two down. Five left. Not as bad as I would have expected so far ... until I get results, that is. Both have been on campus so that eliminates a lot of extra (and unnecessary) hassle IMO.

VHDL was a bitch, 5 left.
    B is a fail.

In some courses/faculties, there is a percentage cap on the marks you can earn in repeat exams. This is because students tend to do better in repeat exams than first time around and also to discourage the attitude 'ah sure if i fail i can always repeat'.

A student is expected to attend lectures and study for their exams and not fail!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

80-85% cap on repeat exams? That's a lot! When I was doing my degree in UCC it was 40%. Not that it mattered to me.

As for this year's exams, I just finished my final one and I couldn't be happier! No more college for me!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 414 ✭✭danh789

so how do you find out if there is a cap on a particular repeat exam?

Ask in the department or else have a look at the Marks and Standards.

    IIRC it's capped at 40.

That doesn't mean it's marked out of 40, it's marked as normal and if above 40, is dropped to 40%.

80/85% is bollocks IMHO as in Arts anyways, it's almost impossible to get above 75.

I don't think it's crap TBH, if you failed the first exam then that's your call. Maybe there is a few people who genuinely find it hard but among my friends anyway, the ones who fail are doing so as they do no work.

if a student didnt bother their arse to attend lecturers or study whats the point in rewarding them by letting them fail the first time and giving them a second chance to do as well as those who worked? i understand not everyone who fails didnt work but a very high percentage deserve to fail.

    lol?

some departments literally throw marks at you.

no, are the august exams marked out of 85% instead of 100%, or something like that

already been answered. as janey says it depends on the dept. in arts.

and as far as i know in recent years a lot of departments have adopted this...

I think capping it at 40 is becoming the norm.

I think it's fair enough. If you fail your first chance because you haven't studied then why should you get the chance to do better than those who initially studied?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,110 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tar.Aldarion

If it is not capped then anybody should be allowed repeat an exam in august.

Shocking exam today, probably my first non A, so bad. What a hard exam... ****in' up my 1.1!

    what's the difference between a 1.1 and a 1st?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

A 1.1 is the highest you can get. A 1st is just a general name for it and for a 1.2. (is there a such thing as a 1.2 or does it go straight down to 2.1?)

They give 1.1s to real courses? ba dum :P

I think they are the same, what do you have for a 2.1 and a 2.2?
    Second, a second second?
    There is no 1.2

2/5 done. I just wish we had them all in one week to get them all over with tbh...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭Lockstep

I'm on here. Laughing at you all.

    I've been done a week.

Yeah but we will get a real degree. Wink

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,005 ✭✭✭✭Toto Wolfcastle

    Aw, that's harsh!

I've been finished all week too and I get a real Postgrduate Diploma!

Exams finish really early in NUIG. Is it normal to be finished so early?

This time last year I was still in study month!

Ah ya, I forgot I started in early September. All makes sense now.

Yup, UCC gives a month to study. So that's 3 weeks to watch daytime tv and one week to study. I wouldn't say it's soft, it's just the way the college is structured.

Not that I care anymore, no more college for me!

Ya, Easter fell at a crap time this year, luckily for my final year (next year), study week comes directly after the Easter holidays so we will at least have the opportunity to get 3 weeks study done. :D

    A first or 1.1 is 70%+ while a 2.1 is 60-69%. I think a 2.2 is between 55 and 59%. Like you said no 1.2 just 1.1.

Going alright so far. I'm doing Arts so the frantic reading-over-3-precise-essays-the-night-before- hoping-all-three-will-come-up-which-they-usually-do is working out pretty well, if a little stressful. Can't concentrate on my COD4 games knowing I have to start study for an exam the next morning at 11pm. :D

1st Year Physics. I started on April 25th and had my last written exam there on Tuesday. All were grand except for a disaster of a Maths Physics paper. Horrid stuff. Just two lab exams left, but I'm still not finished till Monday 26th.
