How much would you pay for a photograph?

I'm just back from a trip to Vegas and found a photographer whose work was absolutely superb. Landscape photography but really big prints (over 2m) and the colours were like nothing I've ever seen. Unfortunately for me the price was even bigger, starting price for the images was $4000 going up to $50k.

Would you pay this much for an image? Is there any chance of limited edition images increasing in value like more traditional art?

Personally, no, I wouldn't pay that. I couldn't afford that really.

Yes, some photographs, limited edition, do very much increase in value. Images by people like Ansel Adams and such are worth hundreds of thousands now.

This guy's name was Peter Lik.
His stuff was amazing, really vibrant colours.

Haven't seen Adams work. It must be quality stuff if it gets prices like that.

I wouldn't pay much for art in general :p - I'm one of those people who don't "get it".

I would rather not pay for a photograph and take it myself. But I suppose in the low 10-30 euro for a "stunning" image. Doubt many artists would sell at that price but that free market economics for ya - if you want it you'll pay through the nose for it.

*but I do advocate you spending hundreds of thousands on legal fees - lawyers, what would the world be like without them? *shudders* :D

    depends on the photo,
on a 30k salary i wouldnt have much of a problem paying up till 800 euros.
But its gonna have to be something striking, band photography. Nice portrait or wide wide wide landscape

You'd love this guy's stuff then. Widest landscapes I've ever seen!

I saw Peter Liks photos when in Las Vegas last year and the vibrancy and richness of colour would blow your mind away.

    His website is http://www.peterlik.com/home.html

Oh and in reference to another thread, he is completely self taught

Does that sun burst look a bit superficial to anybody ? maybe its just me.

I'm well familiar with them alright. Think he's an Aussie bloke.

No idea his pics were going for that amount though.

But to answer your question, there's no way on earth I'd fork that kind of money. And yes, some photographers work does indeed appreciate like more traditional stuff.

Google William Eggleston, desiree dolron (shock horror I actually like (some of) her stuff), Bernd and Hilla Becher for people whose stuff has been on the rise for a bit now.
Whether it's worth 100k or not worth looking at though, is, as ever in the eye of the beholder.

Had a look at some of this guys stuff a few weeks ago, tacked onto the end of an Ansel Adams exhibition in Edinburgh, some of the prints were on sale for £4000-5000.

I wouldnt see myself paying it for someone elses photographs to be honest, as i would never feel i had the same connection with it compared to one i was really proud of myself, even if it was nowhere near the same quality.

Peter Lik...is his gallery the one in the Venetian? I remember viewing it, but only a single mono winter landscape really impressed me. Everything else just looked hugely over-processed; saturation and contrast were boosted through the roof (which is an accusation that has been levelled at me, but I don't charge $50k for a print FFS), and I'm fairly certain that colour filters were used to add casts to images.

Whinging aside, I'd pay very little to put it pragmatically. There's both a huge amount of Creative Commons-licensed work out there that I both use and add to, in addition to my own photographic abilities.

most i've sold a pic for was €200, if memory serves - a very large canvas print, though.
i'd be less likely to spend money on a photo, given i've so many of my own and from friends, i could choose from to hang. i went on the hunt for a painting a while back, though, with a budget of about €500, but didn't find anything that really floated my boat.

That would be me as well, I'd take a good look at it and then go and try and take it myself, much more satisfaction in that. Helps to build up a list of places I'd like to visit too :)

There's one there in the flash at the top that's not in any of the collections, it's a white house with a blue door, up really high overlooking a bay. I absolutely love it!

theres one of a beach that is so over-processed it looks like CGI.

It looks very similar to the Computer game 'Far Cry' if anyones seen it.

Bleech. I feel a bit ill now from all that colour. Think Ill go and look at some Henri Cartier Bresson now.

I love Peter Lik's work but again, had some trouble with the issue of 900AUD for one of his prints in Cairns when I was there. I bought one of his books though.

If you like that style, Ric Steiniger is also worth a look (and I did buy one of his prints, as it happens).

    Me too!

Somewhere in the Aegean I suspect. All those Greek islands have those views.

I think the website doesn't do them justice to be honest. They have a 'wow' factor when you walk into the gallery. Granted not every single image is going to be everyones taste.

I tend to look at photographs for enjoyment and not really a technical analysis. Thats probably cause I don't have the technical knowledge!

Had a look at Ric Steiniger images online, pretty impressive.

I spent €1000 on a picture last year from a well known Irish artist. I quite liked it and it's also an investment. Although I don't think I'd want to part with it.
