Getting a PS/2 to USB connector to work?

I have HP/COMPAQ NW8240 work laptop which has no keyboard PS/2 connection, only USB ports available. So I purchased a PS/2 to USB connector assuming this would allow me use an external keyboard (MS Wired 500 Keyboard).

So I connected the connector to keyboard, and then to laptop, and am getting the message USB Device Not Recognised. If I hit the NumLock button on the keyboard it lights up, so I know there is a connection, however the keyboard won't work.

I've gone to the MS site, and downloaded software for the keyboard, rebooted, tried different USB ports, a different keyboard (same story), but still no joy.

Any ideas / advice ?

Not strictly a laptop problem. Moved from the laptops forum.

I think in these situations, it is a two stage setup - get the connector working first, then get the keyboard working.

Other than that, I don't know much else about them.

The cheaper adapters (eg. this one) will only work with dual-protocol keyboards and mice. From what I've googled, your keyboard is PS/2 protocol only so you'll need one of the more expensive adapters with USB HID to PS/2 interface circuit.

What is the brand and model number of your adapter?

My adaptor is the same as the one in the link you provided.

Yes, that one should work. The type you need seem to be known as *Active* adapt(e|o)rs.
