I went to see it at the weekend and thought it was fine. I know there are those that will say the jap version is better almost by default with out even seeing the english remake.
Well I did not think the remake was better but just more of the same. Its a long time since ive seen the jap version ( or where ever its from ) so I dont remember it that well.
But the remake did have one think the orignal did not, Jessica Alba so for me that made it a winner right off.
Still worth a look if only to compare and bitch about the differences.

There was a Japanese version? Is it as good as the original Hong Kong film? :p

That was sarcasm, there is no Jap version. The original film is a Hong Kong production, so that must be the one you've seen.

oh right. Just when you said that it got me thinking.
In the credits of the new film is says based on they eye AKA some chineese name then AKA some other chinese name AKA some other name.
So with like 3 different titles I thought there may have been more than 1 asian version.

From now On ill stop calling films jap veraions just asian versions, that covers a multitude.

I actually thought it was pretty good to a point; that point being able two thirds into the film, a sudden change of genre from Horror to Thriller. This is what I said about it in Film Reviews:
Another remake, but in this instance I haven't actually seen the original so I can't draw any comparisons between the two. That said I usually judge both films on their own merit; the originals for a superior sense of spine tingling horror, the remakes for superior visuals that contribute significantly to frights and general credibility. All the atmosphere in the world can be let down badly by poor execution of essential visual elements, and this is why I generally prefer, for example, 'The Ring' to 'Ringu' - the latter may be superior in most regards, but fails badly in terms of visually stimulating in comparison to its Hollywood brother. In my opinion, of course - but I feel this is an important point as I'm entirely convinced someone else will come along baffled at how anyone could regard 'The Eye' as anything less then a farce.

One thing that pleased me immensely about The Eye was something that I'd also applauded The Orphanage for recently - a lack of random 'BLEUGHH!' moments that were up until recently a staple and fundamental part of any remake. Instead the focus is, as it should be, on strange events and unexplainable occurrences and, naturally, the attempts to get to the bottom of said events. There is, honestly, nothing worse then waiting for a shock because the film has become a bit stale and you just know there's a somewhat irrelevant pick-me-up waiting in the next cupboard/doorway/etc rather then as an actual progression of atmosphere/tension.

That said The Eye has enough of it's own problems as a film aside from the style of the genre. There is a fair amount of clunky, hammy acting and string thin developments in the plot and the film shifts somewhat - disappointingly - from horror to thriller towards the admittedly mediocre finale, but on the whole, you could do a whole lot worse then The Eye.

I would give it 6.5/10, the finale detracts somewhat from a generally good horror movie.

As a plus, yes it features Jessica Alba, though to be honest I never found her that attractive a person. But she looks great in this movie, very little make up and a world apart from what she looks like in every other movie she's in. I really hate that made up look with a passion.

Went to see it on Wednesday after Iron Man and I enjoyed it for what it was. I have yet to see the original, having only seen the sequels but on the strength of the remake I picked it up today. There was a more interesting tint to my viewing of The Eye but that's a tale for another day.
