Installing Linux

    All,

I'm thinking of installing Linux, have a couple of questions.

Once its installed do I have to make changes to get back to the XMB? And playing games, do I need to switch between OS to get back to playing games? And for that matter whats the craic with playing Blu Rays?

Thinking of installing a 500GB hard drive, using it mainly for watching video as some of my collection wont work on the PS3, and also going to try and use Torrents as well.

    Cheers

I installed Yellow Dog Linux. To switch back, just type 'boot-game-os' into the terminal screen.

Games can only be launched from the XMB.

This I don't know. I mean, it detects CDs and DVDs in the drive. I assume I just need to install a media player or driver for Blu-Ray. I just haven't come across it yet.

    cheers for that.

is there any way to have the XMB as the default?

    can't use the blu ray

games won't run well (not ps anything i mean pc game) as the video card locked out

hold the reset for a second or two a it will go bakc to starting with ps3 os
the linux os has to be set a start up os to get in

Sorry Varik I couldnt really understand the last piece of your post.

If i hold the Reset button for a second or two it will boot back into the XMB. How to you switch back to the Linux again then? I would like to have Linux but i dont want to have to type "boot-game-os" everytime i want to play a game. My PS3 is in the living room and i dont want a keyboard lying around.

There's a link in the start menu (or whatever the YDL equivalent is called), you can also create a shortcut on the desktop to do it too.

you mean theres a link to the command "boot-game-os" that will bring me back to XMB?

and lastly can you set the PS3 controller to work like a mouse on Linux?

Just out of curiosity, why would you bother doing this?

I mean, you can easily install linux onto a pc, why would you put it on a ps3?

i have a 500GB external HDD with lots of Divx and XVid movies/tv shows and alot of them dont work on the PS3, especially some of the older ones.

i have 10 seasons of south park in Real Format as well that wont work on the PS3. plus i'm able to get an internal 500gb HDD for €90 so i think i might as well.

and lastly i have a work laptop that has a locked firewall that seems to block torrents, so it would be handy to download the torrent on the PS3 then watch it in HD on the TV. currently i have to download the torrent using a PC in work, copy to hard drive and then play this on the PS3, and i have got caught with some formats not working.

Oh all of the above plus i'm a bit of a nerd so just seems like something to try out.

Could one theoretically run games? I knwo they mightn't play well, but do they run in theory? What about other applications?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

its a full version of Linux afaik. so all apps work, games work but the graphics are reduced. there are loads of vids on youtube about it.

CS 1.6 would work fine if I could get it to work myself...

You can set the PS3 to boot the XMB PS3 OS as default, and only boot linux if you then set it on the XMB menu (yeah, it would be irritating to always have to type boot-game-os, thankfully you can set the default behaviour).

It's quite slow really. It made more sense when PS3 OS couldn't do DivX, now there is not much point however.

External guys, external! There is nowhere that currently has a 2.5" 500GB drive for that kind of money. They only came into existence a few months ago.

Cheap 500GB USB drives are ten a penny these days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

    correctamundo.

the PS3 uses a 2.5" (yep, a laptop one) SATA HDD, so if you want to swap out the boot drive that's what you'll need to replace it with.

you can have any old USB drive externally as long as it's formatted in FAT32, but the only thing you'll get inside the PS3 is a 2.5" 9mm high SATA drive like you'd get in a new laptop.

    Guys,

Its a friend of a friends company that has the 500gb for €90. But i think they might be "Friend" prices. The real price is €120 normally. Here's the link:

yep, except that all of those seem to be desktop drives and the PS3 uses a laptop drive.
    SATA 3 Gb/s Hard Drives 3.5"
    500GB, 8 MB cache, 7200 RPM

and at €90 for a 500gb drive those are tourist prices, not friend prices, it's a rip off.

komplett do a 500gb 3.5" sata drive for €64 and even the exact same drive as the one on your link is only €74. http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=331024

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

ah crap. i was just about to buy one of them, forgot about the 2.5" part. lucky escape there.

    no bother, easily done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

Ok just double checked, i asked the guy for prices for 2.5" but he gave me 3.5". So I asked him to make sure they were 2.5" and now the price is €95 for 320gb. How does that add up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

€95 for a 320GB 2.5" hard drive is not too shabby as Komplett are €119 for a WD 320GB.

    The 320GB is 2.5" right?!

    yeah i'm 100% sure now. :-)

What does Linux look like on the PS3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

same as on the PC. you can use a "command prompt" style input or a GUI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,871 ✭✭✭Conor108

Wait you can run PC games on the PS3 through YDL?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Games you can run on Linux. Its complex. If anyone finds a guide, post a link cos my Linux-knowledge is non-existent tbh.

If you've Linux installed on your PS3, this program lets you stream games to your console somehow

Would PC games work if you ran them inside Win4Lin do you think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

Just remember, though you can run Linux on the PS3, it is very slow as there are only two processors open to it. The amount of memory it can use is also reduced.

From what I've read, the only games that run OK are from years ago, like CS1.6 and Quake, maybe UT.
