    Hi,

My girlfriend is currently living in Dublin, and is now expecting in the new year. At the moment we don't live together, but I have my own house in offaly in which I am living.

Is she entitled to rent allowance if she moves in with me?
Also, would she be entitled to Single Parent Allowance or something similar?

She would not get rent allowance (they would treat you's as a couple) or one parent family if she lived with you (as she would not be a one-parent-family!)

The reason I ask, is because at the moment I am just coping with paying the full mortgage myself. I'm not going to be able to afford to look after the 3 of us, especially if the gf is not working.

The house is only new too, and I have loads of stuff to do with the house. The pregnancy was not planned :(

Children's Allowance- and I believe under the last finance bill, you can do a joint tax return, despite the fact that you're not married- so you'd maximise your credit usage. Nothing else comes to mind.

Is she not working, would she not be entitled to the stat maternity benefit?

The early childcare supplement, medical card, Family Income Supplement.

Are you sure about cohabiting couples being able to do a joint tax return? It was kept very quiet if so.

You can definitely do joint dental/medical/educational expenses (for the first time), I will have to check and come back re a full return. I need to check this out, and postback here. Note: the excess for the expenses has been removed- but its all at the marginal rate :(

Can ya defo do the tax back for medical expenses jointly for non-married couples?? Could I do that for 2007 or is it just for this year?? Cheers

Sorry- it only came in the last Finance Bill- aka its 2008 onwards.

Haven't had a chance to lookup elsewhere regarding tax return yet.

I can't find any reference to it in the Finance Bill, but it is still going through Committee Stage isn't it?

It would be very interesting if true, as it would mark a major policy shift.
