Hey im in ucd studying medicine, heading into first med next sept and I was just wondering if any of you know of any summer jobs which would be available and of vague relevance to med students? Some friends of mine are doing porter or admin but they are either guys or have parents who are doctors who know someone etc. I would love to work in a hospital environment or any healthcare environment for that matter. Obviously I have send the auld cv into the various hospitals etc but have heard nothing yet now. Any ideas or have you heard of anyone who is looking for med students>!?

I would not recommend working in a hospital while a student, unless you are doing research. You could be working in hospitals for the rest of your life go and do something different.

Traumadoc has a point. A lot of nursing students don't do the care assistant work because they would get sick of spending too much time in the hospital.

However the pay is much better than what you would get working in say McDonalds or a bookshop.

If you are going for it, be wary of catering departments. They tend to be the friendliest staff but they're also not treated great, especially part time staff. As a porter you could find yourself doing fourteen hour shifts (not all the time though) with a very sore back.

Admin work is okay though can be stressful depending on where you're working. Also mind numbingly boring.

Regarding care assistant work, as far as I know you have to have experience or a fetac course to work in the publics. I initially got my job through contacts at a private hospital where there's less full on care work. Plus if you're a guy you'll get called on to do all the lifting and rolling, not good for your back! Still it's good for learning how to deal with patients as you're looking after their basic needs and I'd imagine helpful for learning how to convince stubborn old men to take their medications or have procedures done when you're a doctor :)

You should try a pharmacy if you can imo. A few people I know did work there last summer, and it was surprising how much they learned regarding the various drugs etc.

You have about 4 months off so go travelling, learn a new language, do some volunteer work. Enjoy yourself. You don't get that many of these opportunities. There are plenty of poor countries you could volunteer in a healthcare setting. Just remember you are have just finished pre med and don't try to do something you are not qualified to do.
