I've got a dual boot with Vista.

No major problems except I'm struggling to get my 3USB wireless modem Huawei E220 working at all.

I'm not at all techy - totally an end user and I'm finding it all quite frustrating.

I've got the Vodafone driver but now i have to get a load of python-twisted packages to open it.

Well, I'm learning a lot so I'll keep at it.

The other thing is my PC speakers don't work. The inbuilt laptop speaker does though...

Seems from the Ubuntu forums a lot ofe people are having trouble with wireless connections and with sound.

Check out the Unix forum. Some posts were put up this evening about it.

Thats strange. Have you tried right clicking on the volume icon near the clock and clicking open volume control? Then file and see whats in the list?

    Thanks dude.

I've been having a look. Seems a bit daunting but I'm getting more used to working with the terminal.

Looking at the Ubuntu forums, loads of people have been having trouble with wireless connections.

    Thanks a million!:)

    AFA.

I just installed it. I'm getting the black screen of death on bootup. I'd like nothing more than to ditch Windows, but every time I decide to make the jump, I end up with a lot of work on my hands. I think I might just give OS X a shot next and see how that goes.

When you get the GRUB menu, pick the entry for Ubuntu and hit 'e' to edit the arguments passed to the kernel. Remove the segment: "quiet splash" and hit 'b' to boot. This will give verbose output of what's going on and you might be able to see why it's halting.

Installed Hardy without a hitch. I'm finding it better than Gutsy, so happy am I! I still resort to Windows for a few things, but I just love using Ubuntu. Someday I'll be windows free!

I tried that. But the only thing that jumps out is "intel_rng: FWH not detected"

I have a thread on it over at the ubuntu forums outlining what I did:

I upgraded over the internet a few days after it came out, it updated ok but there have been a few issues.
The log-in screen was the wrong resolution, so the input box was in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Fixed that by manually editing the config file.
I have a ralink chipset so I had to get the latest serialmonkey files and compile the driver to get my wireless working properly. The rt61pci that comes with Ubuntu would slow down and hang after a few minutes use.
Something has also gone wrong with Xine (video player) I can't play .rmvb files anymore and when ever I double click a movie the Xine window starts up behind the Nautilus window, I think that is a Metacity bug.
I've also had to do more reboots than with Gutsy, updates are coming in thick and fast so hopefully things will settle down.

Just upgraded form Gusty to Hardy, very impressed so far, works right out of the box, if you have any wireless issues install wireshark from within synaptic.
You might need to enable global repositories if synaptic doesn't find it.

Try to skin up Ubuntu Satanic Edition, produced in response to the Christian edition ubuntu. makes Ubuntu even cooler,

Just installed on my Laptop last night. Takes a while to start up... I think that might be due to the harddisk taking it's time. It's not much faster than Vista to start up.

It is good, and it runs quick...but I haven't fully ironed any of the little glitches out. It doesn't like my touchpad, so I have to use a USB mouse, and I still have to get the right codecs and programs installed.

I also need to switch to an XFCE desktop... I prefer the Rat. But I had a Ubuntu install, from a colleague in the job.

I'm not using it daily yet...it's not dialled in right... but I have been a Linux user on my old Laptop, and was impressed with how well Xubuntu 7.10 dealt with minimal resources. Didn't seem to run too much slower than 8.04 Ubuntu on this new monster of a thing, which I find greatly impressive... even if it did grind itself into the ground if you tried to run more than three programs at once and could barely rended 2Fps of the Atunnel Screensaver.

Toshiba L10 Satellitte Pro. Damn near indestructible. Even if it only had 256Mb of RAM, I will remember it fondly.
