Different types of grass.. Which to choose?

    Hi all,

I'm getting a bit sick of my pale yellow "lawn". The grass seed that was used when the house was built 10 years ago is rubbish. Its this straw like stuff, and not the softer blade type that you often see on proper lawns in older houses. I suspect the grass seed has more recently come from the lowest bidder.

Here's the type I have at the moment.. Is this what you could call with or without rye??

Considering that I want to use the lawn for the summer, just to relax in the garden or the odd barbeque, I'm thinking of getting a weedkiller that just gets rid of all of the grass, and then rotavating the whole thing.

The average quote for turf rolls is around the €1000 mark. I suspect I'll be seeding it!

Would you recommend seeding it now so that I could use the garden just to relax in around June/July or wait until October to reseed?

    You have several choices:

Yellow Grass is not caused by bad Grass seed it is due to poor care and maintenance.

    Option 1
If your lawn surface is bumpy and uneven then kill it off in August after the barbeque season and relay the lawn.

If you have a large lawn you can purchase No 2 Lawn seed from an argicultural store in multiples of 10KG (5 euro per KG)

    Option 2
If it is weedy then Spray with D50 Selective Herbicide (available in Most DIY Stores or Agricultural stores :12-15 Euro) which kills all the weeds but leaves the grass intact.

Cut the lawn 2 weeks after weed treatment and lower the mower deck gradually on each successive cutting until you have 2-3" Blades of Grass
Try to use a mower that collects clippings. Dead clippings left in Grass to acculmulate choke the lawn at ground level.

Apply a lawn Fertilizer (For a large lawn get a Bag of Potato Fertilizer (e.g. Gouldings 7-6-17 (25 Euro 20 KG) spreading it evenly. Spread the fertilizer just before rain is forecast.

You Grass seems to be moss free so count yourself lucky!!!

Thanks for the info. Its actually more the type of grass thats annoying. Its the thin prickly stuff, and not the green blades of grass you often see. I've found it difficult in the past to dig the ground because of builders rubble under a level of around 1ft. I suspect that there was all sorts of rubbish thrown in there and it was covered with a foot of top soil.

What kind of seed should I look for that has the softer more dense blades of grass as opposed to the prickly stuff I have now?

If you want a softer grass, try a No 1 lawn seed which is about 50% more expensive than no 2 mix. Check that is is rye grass free or sometimes sold as show lawn mix. It is a lot finer but does not put up with wear and tear so well. Tough Grass growing through the sward can be tamed by cutting it close during the summer season, however if planting a new lawn it is best to cut at 3-4" for the first year.
