'Major Athletics Event to be Held in Croke Park'

According to the Sunday Independent and the report from the AAI congress on the AAI website an invitation has been extended to the AAI to hold a 'major' athletics event at Croker as part of the GAA's 125th anniversary.

What event could possibly be held at Croker next year? Its capacity of
70000+ means it could easily host an event like the European or World Championships, but all of those are awarded a good few years in advance of them taking place. And, obviously, the Euro's aren't on until 2010 in Barcelona and the Worlds are in Berlin (unless they're not telling us something!).

What about the World Athletics Final? Is the World Cup on next year by any chance?

Maybe the Euro Cross countrys are being moved to Croker, and they'll just do laps of the pitch!:D

I'd say it will something like a mile on the grass track or a couple of races, relays whatever along the lines of what the Tailteann Games would have been like. Could be good craic to be involved in.

    Well that's an anti-climax! :p

I thought the word 'major' might have meant one of the international champs.

I remember Pierce O' Callaghan saying in an interview in the Irish Runner that he'd love to bring a major championships to Ireland, possibly using Lansdowne Road with a portable track (apparently there are such things).

I'm only assuming that'll be the case as a major championship would have to be held next year as thats the 125th anniversary and as you say all the major's are allotted well in advance.

Maybe Ben & Jerry O' Conner in a shuttle relay versus Asafa & Tyson, my money would be on the Cork boys now that they are on the grant and have hot showers and a dinner after training or Damien Fitzhenry versus Pitkamaki in a puc fada/javelin head to head. Would work, make it happen AAI/GAA.
