that's a opel vectra, they use vectra's now as undercover cars, haven't seen a squad car vectra in a while though.

there's loads of them around, you just haven't been looking in the right places, but yeah that pic is very out of date.

seldom sky mention the gardai. ive seen plenty of vectras, marked and unmarked.recently saw a marked vectra estate cdti traffic corps in dublin 1.saw a vectra saloon unmarked today, they seem to me to be usually navy for some reason:confused:

Unmarked Garda cars always seem to be flat colours, presumably to save money on metallic paint. If you see a red or navy Focus or Mondeo, usually missing a wheeltrim or two, look for the tell tale aerial stumps on the roof.

    All Dublin registered too.

    All Dublin registered too.

Never understood the mentality with this one. Marked cars, fair enough but unmarked?????

Unmarked cars are easy to spot if you know where to look. No alloys, D registered, radio arials, no garage sticker on back window, usually way over the speed limit and sometimes the uniformed garda is a good give away too;)

about 4-5 yrs ago I saw an unmarked BMW with a NI reg catching speeders on the M7 outside of Newbridge. The face on the speeding driver was classic.

Let alone dash light, bumper lights and when it brakes there is a gap in the 3rd brake light which has a cluster of LED blues in it.

Karlitos up until recently alot of customs cars were registered outside of dublin for this very purpose, now they're all D reg.

Where are garda cars registered to?? HQ???

"Can I get a reg check on a 05-D......., red mondeo"
"Yea thats registered to An Garda Siochana Phoneix Park.....No insurace showing, tax is ok no recent sale date"

    "Anything on the catalogue" :p

Wasn't there an operation last year on the M50 where armed police stopped and detained a car full of drugs and arms and amongst the police vehicles used were a taxi and an eircom van?

I suppose if they want to be really undercover they can.

Saw an unmarked BMW 5 series estate today (silver). Was filling up at Texaco in Lucan when I heard the siren. There was a lot of traffic outbound and the BMW was finding it difficult to get through it. Maybe a little bit too undercover as people were not moving out of its way. Anyone know which division it belongs to?

Why do you need to know where it belongs to?

There was a load of talk about the Beemers on the motor forum last year and the general view was that they belonged to the traffic core. I have also seen an unmarked Volvo S80 on traffic duties on a certain motorway quiet a bit.

I think it is a bit stupid having D reg unmarked GS vehicles.I have spotted ERU at least 4-5 times and I can easily spot an unmarked patrol.HOWEVER,I think there are advantages to this...bear with me!

1.Every gouger now is paranoid out of there head when they see a Mondeo/Vectra D reg driving around..even though it may not be GS.

2.Although unmarked so as to appear civilian, these cars can be useful as a deterrent.Yes they may be pretty damn obvious, even to the thickest gouger, but as a result these gougers also realise there very well could be ARMED Detectives in that car. Thus,a deterrent.

3.Although obvious to those who know what to look for,not everybody can identify an unmarked car..so they do work on gougers and bad drivers alike!

4.Also,nearly every gouger in the country think undercover and/or armed units drive around in D reg unmarked cars. That aint so!Most,if not all, national units have cars for undercover work
; SDU,ERU,GNDU,NSU etc etc But it's good to keep the gougers thinking they know where the Gardai are!:D

Well, that's my take on things as a civvie:pac:

I would venture, if it was an estate, it was the ERU. They got a couple a few months ago, as has been reported elsewhere.

Just curious thats all. Haven't seen it before. I spend a lot of time on the road and can usually spot an unmarked car if it comes up behind me (generally with no insurance disc) but I wouldn't of thought of a 5 series as an unmarked car.
