Hard Drive Time Machine Question

I have a 160 gb external hard drive that I use a time machine back up device for leopard. I was trying to use this to store files I had on a windows machine and it wouldn't recognise it.

I read up on this and found out that mac computers format the drives in a particular way to use it for time machine backups. This is not recognised by windows

My question is-- Is there a way to format a hard drive so that it can be used as a portable storage device as well as being used as a time machine backup device? Can you create a seperate partition?

Nah that won't work I'm afraid. Time Machine will only back up to a HFS+ formatted drive. But yes you can partition the drive in two; just format one partition in FAT32 and the other in HFS+ (Journaled) for Time Machine. You can use Disk Utility to do this.

MacDrive is what you need. It allows windows to recognise a mac formated drive. Incredibly handy!
