As the title says, why is this forum called unix? Surely *nix would be better?

Is there a reason? Maybe vBulletin doesn't like * in forum names?!

I see the last guy who brought it up was told to get a girlfriend :(

As someone who has one! Could we change it? I think it would make more sense, especially as the majority of posts are regarding linux.

I don't know the protocol tbh. Suggesting it to one of the Unix mods by PM might be the thing to do. Or else one of them will see this thread soon.

After reading that thread he was obviously in desperate need of a shag at the very least.

I don't see the problem personally. Linux is based on Unix so where's the issue? Yeah maybe rename it Linux or *nix but the same people would end up here - what's in a name?

"*nix" is a bit anal IMO. "Unix / Linux" or "Unix / variants" would be fine. I think it's probably fine as it is. I don't think too many people are going to look at the forum name and think "oh...I'd better not post my linux question in that forum".

Unix / Linux would be a better name for people new to linux. They might not know the Unix / Linux relationship.

I see there is not much demand for the change, so I'll let it go. Still think it would be better though :)

Maybe so. It wouldn't bother people either way I'm sure. But you should probably post in Forums, Feedback or Helpdesk if you think it should be changed. It's an admin change and they ain't here.

Sounds reasonable to me. I'd say stick a thread in feedback and link to it in here. I'll give my support.

So where will the GNU/Hurd users post? (all 7 of them..?)

I think the forum name is fine as it is.
By posting here, people are under the assumption that you are using a "Unix-like" system, be it an actual certified "Unix" variant, or the functional open source variants like Linux/BSD. It doesn't matter as long as the OS mostly adheres to Unix convention:pac:

Isn't Os-x a form of Unix, I detest Apple even more than Microsoft, and they get their own forum

I'd give my support tho to Unix / Linux

Ah yes, but OS 9 is not. So we can be on both forums. YES!

How about not specifically UNIX, in fact mostly LINUX, with some other variants thrown as well forum. Has a nice ring to it dont you think?
