    Hi all,

I am trying to get a HP3005dn printer to work with a HP desktop running XP SP2 by USB.

But the installation keeps failing, the device 'not detected properly'.

Now, for the stupid question. For standard, which of these driver should I be installing? One or all?

    Cheers!

Use the HP LaserJet P3005 PCL6 Driver.

When you plug the printer in via the USB cable does Windows recgonise a new hardware device automatically?

With a lot of USB printers you have to install the software before you plug in the printer.

Once you plug in the printer, Windows discovers it and installs the driver that the software installed first.

    Hey keen.

I've tried loads of things. One is downloading the drivers. Turning on the printer to allow windows to detect it. It can't detect and download the drivers and it doesn't recognise the drivers when I point windows to the folder I've saved them in.

This is because the HP drivers don't install that way. Usually you run a setup program (will autorun from the original CD) which loads the drivers for Windows to 'discover'.

Go to the folder you downloaded the drivers to and find the setup application and run that.

Tried that with the HP universal drivers on the P3005dn driver page. When you unzip them there is a setup program. Installed them, followed instructions, connected printer. But the installation failed and it asked could it connect to windows update for drivers. I said yes, this failed. I pointed it towards the folder with the drivers in it. It seems to recognise them initially but then just hangs there indefinitely saying 'wizard installing files'.

With the PCL6 drivers there is no set up program. So I plugged in the printer, the hardware wizard starts and I let it go to windows update, this fails, then I point it towards the folder with the drivers. This doesn't work either.

Thing is, before I reinstalled the OS, this printer worked perfected on this computer. It's only since windows was reinstalled that this has become an issue.
