Just so were clear on how a bad run works, for me at least, its the usual, I run bad, then it gets worse, by now I'm playing bad which result in getting out drawn for not being aggressive enough or whatever, it would break you if you let it.

My usual solution is simply stop playing for a while and this works a treat.

My problem is I have this weekend free, the family have gone away, its raining and I was looking forward to playing more poker in the next two days than I have in the last month.

Anyone got a quick fix, move up or down levels? watch some poker videos?

    What works for you? thanks.

Watch sbrugby1. Take responsibility for your own results. Dont blame it on a bad run or running bad or bad luck or getting unlucky.

Play a lot of hands to eat up the variance.........but usually when someone says need a quick fix for running bad variance isnt the problem

I went through a horrific run live at one stage, just getting outdrawn in the crucial hands for maybe 15 tourneys. The only thing is to keep playing your game and don't change it, unless of course you think your game is bad as well. Thats a whole different matter.

    regular occurrance for me.....

normal fix for me is to move down a level and play more aggro... check your pt stats... you'll find them not as normal.... maybe post them here for advice?

if your multitabling reduce number of tables by 20% and see if it makes a difference...

    run better.....

    Mac

When i'm playing badly (making an effort to call it like it is rather than saying i'm running bad), i usually stop playing holdem and spend some times trying to improve in other games at micro levels. For me this usually involves playing $1 2-7 lowball sngs and low stakes stud games.

I hear if you put your hand on Cookers head and walk around him three times anti-clockwise, you'll run better than you ever have before.

Also, never EVER take poker advice from someone who capitalises all their words.

Not great at analysing pt stats, I filtered to the last two days and they look the same as ever.

I will reduce from 4 to 3 tables or even two, that should help.

That's a little too far gone, rubes are more like dimwits rather than deliverence style yokels.

Yeah, you pretty much answered your own question there.

Pick a hand you played bad recently and were confused by and open pokerstove and get some paper and analyse the life out of it. Every aspect. EV calcs against various ranges and the works.

    just don't play.

feeling you "have to" play will almost certainly make you play worse, imo this is one of the biggest reasons why people who "go pro" suddenly start doing so much worse.

What Macs said. Drop down levels and ride it out, basically. The bad run is affecting your play and dropping down will help normalise this without risking your roll. After a while you should see your results improve then move back up.

When I'm running bad, the first thing I do is check my stats on PT. You might find that because you're running bad you're trying to force the action and are playing too many hands/marginal hands OOP - for me anyway. I'll also spend a LOT of time analysing hands where I've made mistakes or couldv'e made more money etc., to try to learn from every mistake and plug any leaks.

Unfortunately I believe this is the only answer, its what I've been doing for a while now and serves me well.

And also while I'm certainly not a pro, I have been setting a weekly target recently and playing more than usual to achieve this.

    move up levels.

When I am playing bad and losing I put aside some cash to play at a higher level than I usually play and play really aggressively 3betting and 4 betting quite wide. One of my problems when I am playing terribly is that i go into check call mode a lot lose value when I am ahead let people catch up see MUTB and generally suck.

I move up rather than down as my normal game is €50 and if I move down I can't really be bothered but if I move up and am prepared to write off 3 buyins then it improves my game. Often I will show a profit but I do it only for a couple of hundred hands or until I have blown my buyins

I usually tighten up. Avoid all marginal spots and nut peddle. Its low variance
and it will get your confidence back. At lower levels 25.50 - 1.2 you will still make money, people will always pay you off at these levels even the regs.

Some of my biggest winning sessions have been playing 16/12 nitty style and i never had bad downswings playing that style. Where as some of my biggest losing sessions have been playing 25/20 cause you get in so many marginal spots that can go either way.

I play 8 tables and its not exciting and i do lose value and fold
the winning hand on occasion but its worth it imo. Then with your confidence back you can open up your game a bit more.

Its the emotional side of poker that is a lot of peoples downfall myself included. Taking deep breaths and realising you played correctly is so important after you continually get sucked out on. Its the reaction to bad beats that leads people to spew money i do it all the time.

So many times 1 hand were i lose a buy in eg 200$ to a bad beat or hero call actually compounds and can cost me so much more. I estimate a hand played on tuesday i lost 260$ cost me over a 1000$ because i couldnt deal with it and it caused me to play like a complete fish. check calling etc.

So i followed my advice and played solid and nitty booked a few small wins since and am playing with confidence again and it feels great.

Whether winning or losing always keep VARIANCE in mind.

To find out if it's variance or just bad play put your whole roll on red in virtual roulette. If you win, its bad play, lose and it must be variance.

Solid advice, I tried this, and as expected it turned out it was bad variance.

Thanks for the helpful replies, what I did was move up to €2000 nl and blew my roll, sure that's poker for ya.

Actually I just didn't play, there isn't any quick fix for tilt, a rest is the only answer, for me at least.

    Once again thanks,

    Looserock.
