    Hi all

I might need to commute from Rathmines to Dun Laoghaire in the near future.

Would anyone know how long it would take to get from Rathmines to Dun Laoghaire by car, bus etc.

One option I can think of is get the bus from Rathmines into Pearse Street(25 mins), then get the dart from Pearse St to Dun Laoghaire(17 mins)

Would driving to Dun Laoghaire from Rathmines be a nightmare?

    Thanks
    Any advice appreciated!

Depending on where you are in Rathmines, if you get to Leeson Street or Donnybrook you could get the 46a - it would be going against traffic.

Alternatively get the 18 to Ballsbridge and then the DART. Get the 18 from as far east as possible - it gets stuck between Grosvenor Road and the Swan Centre.

    1. problems getting to the Rock Road if you go that way, perhaps Stillorgan DC->Mt Merrion Ave->coast road

alternatively Stillorgan DC->newtownpark avenue, turn right go up by monkstown beside the blue pool and down the back of Dun Laoghaire.

Public transport is likely to be very variable and subject to congestion. There is no direct service so you get two chances to be let down on each journey. It would take about 1 hour-1:20. The 18 bus has a nominal frequency of 3/hour, So you could easily be waiting 40 minutes. Most of its route is subject to traffic delays (no bus lane). There is a 20 minute interval between darts and an unreliable service.

Driving is best as you can avoid the city centre. Go Rathmines, Dartry, Milltown, Eglinton Road, Donnybrook, N11 south to White Cross, left onto Newtown Park Ave, right onto Stradbrook Road, left onto Monkstown Ave, right onto Mounttown Rd, left onto York Road - Dun Laoghaire.

Short cut suggestion; turn left at Stillorgan cross roads into Stillorgan Park and follow it to Carysford Avenue, right and left and your onto Newtownpark Ave at the Playwright; cuts a couple of KM off the trip.

I've seen Dartry get very badly congested with traffic for Ballsbridge and Clonskeagh.

The 46A suggestion is the one to go for. I did this commute myself a few years back. There's a 10 minute walk for you to Leeson Street at the Appian Way junction but the buses come every 5 minutes or less and there is no congention all the way to Dun Laoghaire. The 46A is the best route on the Dublin Bus network. During your 10 minute walk (down Castlewood Av.) you will be walking past stationary traffic and buses; so don't bother with the 18 as it goes through this bottleneck. I also tried cycling to Lansdown Rd and getting the DART but the frequencies on the 46A were better so it didn't save any time at all.
