What do you need to drive a rental car in the US?

I'm assuming credit card as security (what sort of limit?) ?

    Full Irish License ?

Do you need any sort of international driving cert or anything ?

    Credit Card = Yes

    Full Irish License = Yes

    international driving cert = No

Also handy to be over 25, some states do not rent to u 25s, others levy a hefty surcharge for u 25s, check T&C from rental company for such info.

From experience, any idea what sort of reserve they put on your CC funds or if they just want the number?

Any experience with Vegas/LA in relation to your u25 thing ?

No idea about reserve on CC.

No idea either about u25 in nevada, check the T&C of the rental companies it should be on their websites, or google it.

Did a roadtrip there in 2006. All the rental companies we checked required full licence and to be over 25. I think we had paid our rental in full before we left, can't remember at this stage.

we booked the car through this website:

    http://www.carhire3000.ie/

So you can find out what it costs, and it asks for age as well.

I rented from dollar rent-a-car in Vegas last time and don't think there was a problem with being under 25, as one of us was at the time. Might be worth checking them out. They also happened to be the cheapest at the time - booked them through argusrentals.com

I *always* use the same company to hire cars no matter where it is in the world.

Last night I booked them for A 4-day hire in Dublin next weekend and also a car from Las Vegas to San Fran and each time they were the cheapest that I could find. Also the price they advertise includes all taxes and extras *and* they only take about €15 from your CC to reserve in advance.

They'll ask for your age when you book to filter out the companies that won't accept you.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm advertising for them but over the past 3 years they have saved me time and money alike. The fact that they're an Irish company (based in Killorglin, Kerry) is pretty cool too.
