2+2 I believe. The N4 will be a decent road, motorway or 2+2 all the way to Sligo. They should make sure all these 2+2s being used on interurban roads can be grade separated without too much hassle if and when the need arises, for example flaring the carriageways approaching the at-grade roundabouts to allow flyovers to be added easily.

Erm, I don't believe theres plans to 2+2 the entire N4 even in the mid term?

I actually think the next most important bit is grade seperating the Downs section of the road as its lethal as it stands.

I think there will be a 28km stretch of 2+1, there will probably be HQDC/motorway from Dublin to Longford and Sligo to the N17, the rest will be 2+2.

Hopefully the planned 2+1 overlay will become 2+2 as planned for the N17

Are they retrofitting the existing 4km or so of 2+1 and the WS2s as 2+2 then?

Check the NRA website and the Sligo Co Co website...

And the westmeath RDO office for the Mullingar-Longford DC/motorway...

Some sort of dual carraigeway is planned for the end of the Mullingar bypass, to Tomiskey on the Longford/Leitrim border. The proposal is to construct and "offline" dual carraigeway - i.e. no a virgin build as opposed to trying to upgrade existing roads.

I sure as hell hope that it will be at least as good as the McNeads Bridge scheme, but preferably grade separated, and not a watered down "Type 2 Dual Carraigeway" like what exists on the Dromod-Carrick stretch. I saw it out the train window one day - an otherwise good wide single repainted to 2+2 standard with no verges and a bit of chicken-wire down the middle. Dreadful stuff.

Its not chicken wire - its a safety cable.
