Wondering what people think of the new version.

I installed it this week and while there were no infections on any of my machines it did find a load of sh*ite in the registry which incidently spyware terminator failed to identify. It crap was made up of adware, tracking cookies and what looked like remains of trojans.

Previous to this my standard set up was to install AVG 7.5 & Spyware Terminator. I also run a smoothwall express firewall with dansguardian for that belt & braces approach.

So is it a case that Spyware Terminator is a load of rubbish, giving a false sense of security?

I did notice that AVG 8 intermittently maxs out an old Sempron 3000 machine @ 100%, an other machine has no problems being an E6850 however even that goes up to 35%.

Do I need to uninstall AVG 7.5 before I download and install the new version because it is going to take about 6 hours on my wonderful dial up connection.

    Thanks.

No. The installer recognises you have the older version installed and does its magic.

    That's great, thanks! :)

If the new 'AVG Free 8.0' uses more memory, is it still worth the effort of upgrading?

I upgraded to AVG 8 and it's erratically causing Firefox to crash, not impressed

    ....interesting (but unfortunate for you!).

I wonder would it be best to wait a few weeks until more feedback like the comment above is given?

Yes, especially considering updates for 7.5 (free) are to be halted at the end of the month.

Interesting about stoping updates for AVG Free 7.5...

A friend of mine has recently been having problems with automatic updates of AVG Free 7.5...updates kept requiring a computer restart! I was about to advise re-installing AVG 7.5....but now i'll suggest AVG Free 8.0

    Perfect timing.

To address the 'LinkScanner' issue (being too much of a resource on memory)....

I wonder would it be easier to download the whole AVG Free 8.0, and then just disable the 'LinkScanner' from the main menu?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭Katzi

Installed the new AVG 8.0.1 yesterday because updates to the old 7.5 will not be available after end May.

It has been a disaster. The computer is freezing as soon as you try to move on to a second application or task. Trying to unfreeze it via the Task Manager is useless as the whole thing has frozen.

However, I am a bit confused by something and maybe someone out there can help. While I was installing it there was an alert because it had detected Roxio Easy CD & DVD creator which has a bug in it. It suggests you visit the Roxio website and download an update. I do not have Roxio on my computer!! So, I wonder if this is a generic message or is Roxio hidden somewhere. I have done a thorough check though.

Anyone any idea what I can do short of wiping the hard drive? I have uninstalled and reinstalled AVG 8 three times now. I have run both a full computer scan and Spyware check and nothing is showing up.

I am sending this on a laptop as my normal computer is.........yes, you guessed it!......frozen again.

Would be most grateful for any brain waves or suggestions. Thanks.

I installed it the other day - seems okay apart from one thing... the link scanner! I don't want to use this feature, but if I disable it the icon on the bottom right shows a big red X as if there a problem.

Hmmm, what are my other options if I want to ditch AVG for another free AV software package?

Hmm. I don't use AVG anymore (use Bitdefender/Threatfire for active protection and a mix of others for on demand scans) but I have had Linkscanner Pro installed for about 6 months now from it's standalone days and it has absolutely no noticable impact on my CPU usage (And I'm anal about that kinda thing). There must be something very wrong with their integration of it with AVG. HTTP scanning is definitely something you need these days, if you disable it while they try and fix any issues fair enough but don't write it off long-term.

I had to fix a computer recently due to internet explorer just crashing during use... I am really convinced it was the new AVG (The pro version now) was causing it. That link scanner both the free and pro versions have seems to be bloatware and seems to bog all web browsers down. Anyway I uninstalled AVG and the internet explorer still crashed so the machine needed a format (Owner only wanted IE, firefox etc wasnt a option), It might not be AVG which screwed this pc up although I'm pritty sure it did and it would be timing correct, if your looking for a decent freeware anti virus, I've moved onto Avira AntiVir free: http://www.free-av.com/, its good and pritty light on system resources...

Again I never had a resource issue with Linkscanner. I just monitored it['s processes while rapidly opening 6 Firefox instances and browsing/searching (to see if it's read-ahead scans were worse) as quickly as possible with each, neither of it's processes went more than 1% CPU with a combined 25MB of ram usage. There's something else wrong with a system that is showing this as being a system hog (again either it's integration into AVG or if standalone then the PC has other issues and the Linkscanner usage is merely a symptom and not a cause).

Update on AVG 8.0. It is now working fine. BUT - it did mean that I had to reformat my hard disk to remove any trace of Roxio (installed initially by Dell).

Unfortunately whatever version/remnants of Roxio were left on my hard disk were interferring with the new AVG 8.0 to render my computer virtually unusable. It was really hard to find Roxio but I eventually tracked it down through a file directory. No amount of 'search' or using Internet Explorer found it!

Obviously when reinstalling everything I left out Roxio and now everything is working perfectly.

That's it, I'm switching to Avira/Avast. AVG even with Link Scanner disabled is running at over 50% cpu even when I'm doing sod all and is taking up too much mem. Everything is running dog slow

i installed both the free version of avg 8 and the paid version on different machines a few months back: had endless problems, mostly due to it maxing out resources memory, cpu etc. went back to 7.5 and all was well.
i probably *wont* be going back to 8, so im looking for an alternative, lean and mean anti-virus.

Hi guano, just posted in the sticky but I've had the same problems with avg 8, has really made a dog out of my machine, it can take a good few minutes for my CPU to drop from 100%. From reading PC Mag lots of others are having the same issue. I'm switching over to Avast which by all accounts is quite good and is supposedly not as resource hungry.
