"Fixing" Inkjet prints

I have been using my Canon Pixma inkjet to print A4 photos, and they look fantastic.

Problem is the other day I spilt a glass of water over one by accident: And the colours ran all over the place!

Is this normal for Inkjet prints? Its not like I rubbed the water into the picture , it literally ran as soon as it got a little wet.

Is it me using cheap paper? Or is there some sort of "fixer" you can spray on them after printing? Or is that just the way it is?

I cant see my nice prints lasting more than a year or two if they're that delicate.

    What paper are you using?

inkjet prints can be made water resistant, based on the inks and th paper used. but it wont stop them running realistically if you spill a bunch of water on them

there are spray fixatives but they are not great

the only way to make them very very durable is to use a cold press laminator and drytac lamination sheets, you can clean them with furniture polish if you like then

I shoot events using inkjet and give people the option of a convential processed print if they so wish, very few people take it up especially when they can have a print there and then. I use Epson ink and paper and havent had any problems with running inks..

    Maybe that's it.

Just amazing that a few drops of water would make it run.

I mean technically , if it's that fragile, it's not really a print, it's just a sort of temporary display of the picture.

Well Ill try the fancier paper I bought recently and see how that is.

I'm not sure what canon have but my hp printer has water resistant inks. It's one of the small photo printers. I got a 'value pack' or something when I bought it so it's hp paper aswell. It's a 110 cartridge just for photo printing so I don't know if all their inks are the same.

Suppose to be fade resistant to 100 years. Not that I'll be around to dispute that ;-)
