O2 Data on N95

There have been quite a few complaints of late concerning Mobile Broadband performance and O2 Ireland and I too have noticed a marked deterioration.

However over the past few days I have changed my MO and began using the new WALKING HOTSPOT applet with my N95, effectively changing it into a wifi hotspot and bypassing cables and bluetooth. There is another small programme, Joiku, but this one is far better.

I cannot begin to tell you how unspeakably brilliant this is. My connection is now flying and i am clocking speeds of well over 2 megs.

Now to test it with 3 Ireland.

So are you still using the O2 HSDPA network for your data or are you using an Wifi spot?

Apologies if this is not clear: the applet turns your handset INTO a wifi hotspot, using your data connection. Pointless post otherwise. So yes, I am still using O2 HSDPA.

Confirmed - works on Three also - albeit you have to click past that stupid you will be charged notice.

    Nice Find Culabula.

    But only once, surely?

How is it on 3?? On O2 Ireland it is nothing short of outstanding. The one thing I have discovered is that having set it up with my O2, I was unable to use it yesterday in Málaga with my Vodafone ES SIM or today with 3 Ireland. I have just written to them about this anomaly as it seems, for the moment, you can only use it with the first SIM/number you chose, which is árse.

    Sounds interesting.
But there only seems to be about 4 or 5 WM handsets supported. :(
    No Touch-Cruise apparently.

So does this mean whoever uses this will be hogging the bandwidth at the expense of less savvy users :)
    Fair enough i suppose :p

When you say wifi hotspot does that mean you can connect a number of devices through your phone which can act as a hotspot.
    If so that's pretty cool.

Can you not use a second sim/number if you register again with a different email address?

I'm curious about power consumption. How does using this app compare to using the bluetooth modem or cable? Is there even any appreicable difference?

Guess that says it all about WM handsets! :-)

I can't really see why this would impact on bandwidth but it really has improved my use of O2 Ireland massively.

Yes, it works as a wifi hotspot. There is proviso for 5 devices to be connected but it seems only one may be connected at the moment while it remains in beta.

It absolutely eats the battery. I recommend using it only when plugged into the mains (for a long session anyway).

Sorry for not getting this but why not? :)

What is the app registration tied to-
email address, mobile number, sim or handset?
Is it handset specific or mobile number specific?

BTW can you use the sim/number by which you registered the app in different (unlocked) handsets.

You give your IMEI and mobile number as well at the same time as your email address, why I don't know. That appears to be the problem. It's very annoying as I am unable to test 3 Ireland and especially because my O2 IRL SIM is only of use to me while within the ROI.

Tried this app for a while phone actually gets hot when its used. Its definitely not as good as cable or bluetooth the app has to handle all packets and routing and stuff doesnt really do a great job. Some parts of sites dont work,I remember the apple website having issues also downloading through the app is much much slower. Its still a great handy application if u dont have bluetooth on your laptop or maybe using it as a access point for your ipod touch on the move :D

    Right thanks.
So it's tied to the handset/mobile number combo.
    Bit restrictive- hopefully that'll change.

?? My connection is now flying in a way it has never done over Bluetooth. Bluetooth is utterly flakey on the 95 -it is implemented much better on the 6120 Classic for example. Been using this app for 3 days -yes it gets hot and yes it devours the battery but Mobile Broadband finally works as it should do (at least where O2 Ireland is concerned).

Agreed, very frustrating as am now at home in Belfast and can't test it with my 3 Ireland SIM. I could try my E61 but that's not HSDPA. Have 3 6120s but they don't have wifi. Aaarg.

lol...to nag some more: why the O2/n95 title??? Some members will now miss this thread unnecessarily?! It's not strictly about n95 on O2!!!!! i've used it with e61 on vodafone, and their supported handset list is quite extensive!!!

Sheeesh! Cos I was half-asleep! But really, because a) people have been pointing out that O2 data has been deteriorating of late in the style of Tree Oireland and b) because it's more about HSDPA and decent speeds -which you will not obtain anyway by using older handsets such as the E61.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭strecker

Yeah... Ok, but works well with vodafone also, and now I don't need a 2nd sim just to comfortably browse the web on e61 with querty etc... i just share n95/8's connection.

but, hey: I know all about posting in the wrong "frame of mind"....
But as you can also use it to share internet with ipod touch (hot topic that), you should really change the title, like NOWNOWNOW.... Hehehe

    hi,

can you buy data bundles on o2 ireland? cant see it on site. i already pay 30 a month for 02 broadband but it would be handy to have like a 2gb limit on my actual phone. :D

Vodafone don't offer nice bundles on your handset like O2 do or even 3. Sharing your connection from a MacBook was always possible anyway to invite your iPod Touch or anything else to the party. This is a new way of using the existing data bundles at very high speeds -and it works, much better than bluetooth or cables in this user's experience.

However I really don't think NOWNOWNOW is gonna work, so I'll leave it the way it is. Tee. And hee! :-)

But dis am de whole point, Man! I don't have a separate O2 account, I have my voice account with a bundle on the same SIM. Just apply 750mb, 1GB or 10 GB -sure tis only great.

And one other thing...unlike the datamodem yoke, the data bundles can be taken on and off at will, on a monthly basis. Get down!

Just as on the phone normally browsing you get the message about 48c per minute each time you connect to the internet so that means it will only work once you surf to a site and by pass this in the browser.

The speed is not great but as always it depends on time of day and location etc. Given the N95 battery problem ( mine's only last 5-6 hours any day on normal use), it's one for the mains but it's so handy.

Oh, i see. I don't get this message. Are you using a contract SIM from a datamodem?

Well, as I have stated, I cannot test my 3 SIM until they allow me to use multiple SIMs with this app and do away with the crazy restriction. But the speeds I got with O2 were phenomenal and comparable with my home ADSL.

They have since contacted me and have confirmed that only one SIM will at present work with the released trial version.

They are looking into opening it up.

Looks like I'll be joining their Special Test Group (oo-er missus).

I'm trying to connect via the walkinghotspot app on my Three E65. I have the phone and the laptop connected now in an ad-hoc network and as far as I can tell that is setup OK, but I don't have any internet access with it yet. Is there any settings that I might need to be changing from default options in oder to get this working?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,963 ✭✭✭long_b

Installed walking HotSpot on my HTC TyTn, running WM6 and it screwed up bigtime.

Lots of hangs, had to reset several times (even after the uninstall)

    Ggrrrrr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭culabula

I now have my account reprovisioned and can use multiple SIMs and connect up to 5 devices to the one hotspot, using this app.

I have therefore tested my 3 Ireland dataSIM and can honestly say that is it still the biggest pile of shÎte, albeit reasonably priced, I have yet used. The performance of O2 however, as I have stated, is and continues to be outstanding.

This is now my preferred method of using the data bundle with the O2 account as it leaves BT, cables and datmodems standing. Only caveat is to use it only when close to a power point.

    WalkingHotSpot - warning.

The first thing that happened to my O2 SIM the other day following the change to the account was that it stopped working for data -totally. Coincidence? I don't know -but it's very weird.Got a new SIM and it started working again.

Today, my N95 "exploded". Totally fried. The battery, innards and back cover are melted to hell. This, I blame on WalkingHotspot.

    Not good.

Are you saying a piece of software can do this to a phone's hardware. :)

    Holy Jeebus.

    Sorry to hear that culabula.

Was it an OEM Nokia battery ? Aren't they supposed to have some sort of automatic cut off ?

I've been using WMWifiRouter in my HTC TyTn, the battery gets a little hot but not that hot. Same with Joiku on my E61.

It was a genuine Nokia battery. All I know is that I smelt burning but didn't know where it had come from. It was only later on when I realised the thing wasn't charging that I investigated and found the battery severely burnt and swollen and parts of the phone melted.

In 13 years of GSM phone usage I have never seen anything like it personally and I attribute this extreme overheating to use of WalkingHotSpot until such times as I am told otherwise.

Could be a faulty battery either, its not unknown to happen. In anycase return the n95 with with receipt to whereever it was bought and try get it fixed under warranty. Worst they can do is say no.

Using the Wifi in general makes my E65 get hot, but if using the phone itself then your less likely to have it on for a long period. Once you put it into walking hotspot then your probably leaving the hanset unattended for a longer period of time and not noticing the thing getting so warm.

I too noticed my n95 get hotter than usual when walkinghotspot was in use. I just didn't use it a lot.

Let us know how you get on with getting a replacement as I think that this is a Nokia responsibilty. Email therregister.co.uk about it to get a bit of attention.
