    i want to apply for another job but don't want my current employer to know. anyone any idea what my rights are here? can i ask the potential future employer not to contact or will this mess with their right to inquire for reference

    anyone got any ideas????

    Usually references are only required if they are actually offering you the position. Put "References available on request" on your CV instead of actual details.

    Also dont list your current company as a reference, then they will not contact them. Use previous jobs before your current one.

    Technically, they wont contact anyone without your permission, placing a reference on your CV is effectively giving them permission. I have interviewed many people and I viewed it as perfectly normal for someone to ask me not to contact their current job, as long as they gave me some valid reason like "it would create a little tension in the office".

    I would make sure you have 2 good back up references in this case, as if prior employers give the impression that you were not great as an employee, I would then wonder if the reason you did not want me to contact your current employer is because you are in trouble (or fired from) there.
