Heard from a friend that the RDF will get riot training and their to be called in instead of the Gardaí. Can anyone tell me if this is true or not?

Called into what/where and how do you operate a recall system for part timers?.

Jeeze its hard enough to get the PDF lads in for their duties sometimes :D

But in all honesty, I think your friend while well intentioned is day dreaming.

While it is possible it highly improbable that we will get riot training. Although the training is done up in the Curragh...but No we wont be getting it. That is for Prison Officers, Gardai and strike breakers.

Our battery went up against the PDF the day before GWB flew in (05 was it??)...well trained unit, good drills and they made quite an impression. We nearly had them rattled when someone threw at tree at them though :D

I seem to recall back in the 1990s, the FCA getting some form of crowd control training. Not as a replacement for the Gardai, though, but in cases that the Gards got overwhelemed.

This would be pretty sensible. As an example of how it should world, back during the anti-war riots in San Francisco in 2003, the local police became overwhelmed after two or three days. They called in for assistance from neighbouring forces, they became burned out in two or three days. Next called in were the California Highway Patrol. That's the last of the police forces available, so when CHP were called in, us Army types suddenly found our tank training schedule replaced with a riot control review. Fortunately for the protestors, things died down before CHP threw in the towel.

Due to time constraints unfortunetly it isn't possible to cover all the things the PDF do whilst in the RDF.

And while it might appear to be the case the the PDF are getting preferential treatment over the RDF thats not the case.

And I think very few PDF lads even think that way these days.

There's other concern's for riot training in the RDF also in so far as the RDF lads have to get up for their civvie jobs or college the next day and any injuried would impinge greatly on those things.

But in all honesty, if anyone looks at the annual training directive there's simply not the RDF man hours to cover everything.

Monthly training directives are published in CONNECT magazine.

I seriously doubt we will get riot training, and if so i don't think we'll replace the Gardaì when theirs a riot, i think they get enough of it to be able to defend themselves, let alone have part timers come in a help them out(Most RDF lads would just call in sick or something anyway)

The old PDF (of which i was a member ) was trained in riot control during the troubles and was frequently called out to aid and assist the gardai if needed.

Actually did riot training with the FCA during the hunger strike period. I got trained on the CS gas/rubber bullet gun. Had great fun practising snatch squads with fellow soldiers. The one thing I remember being told was to never raise the baton above your head when beating the crap out of rioters. Apparently it looked bad on TV:D.

We also used to help train the PDF by providing rioters for them. Lobbing sods of turf at them was great fun. I have to say it got very 'realistic' at times. They PDF loved to beat the hell out of sandbags we loved bopping them with turf.

Riot training is very different nowadays then. My Dad was on a Course with Prison Officers in the Curragh and 2 lads got injured when petrol bombs were lobbed at them!!!!!

true minidazzler, I was on that recent course in the Curragh. The petrol bomb training is very controlled but two lads picked up burns on their legs for some reason. very intense course and the Curragh jail was great and very realistic.:)

Ballyshannon many times and the put put put sound of the panard was a joy to the Gardai as they tried to hold the line during tense times in the 70's. Heard many stories from a Garda relative who was stationed in Co. Donegal during the troubles. Riots were a regular thing probably Lifford as well.

The T-shirt my da got is class as well and In my Humble opinion, the way they did it, ie petrol bombs and stuff, is the best way to do it. Its better to get injured in training and learn from it rather than get injured in real life and not recover.
