I listen to the news alot during the day and i would almost never listen to stations that play music, i prefer chat based programs, so therefore it would be either Newstalk or Rte1.

What station do you listen to the most of the 3 options?

I used to listen to Newstalk a lot but the likes of Eamon Keane and his patronising style of broadcasting turned me off I only listening to Moncrief now and a bit of George Hook.

I think a lot of the Newstalk staff take themselves too seriously Brenda Power an other example.

Radio Forum might be the appropriate venue for such a discussion?

    I kinda agree.

I like the soirts show.. off the ball, george hook too. But the morning show and the with theat ex tv3 girl and Brenda power constantly harping on about the one issue is getting a little boreing.

That being said, i still prefer to listen to it than Pat *Yawn*Kenny

This subject has been raised and beaten about the place a few times in the last year or two.

News and current affairs on ALL the nationals is a mixed bag at best - Kenny good (not boring just sober), much of Newstalk prone to wayward presentation and lazy (read cheap) production. Today FM only have one weekeday show to worry about and thats much of a muchness every day.

None of it comes close to BBC radio 4 news programmes and yes they do have far greater resources.

    Mike.

Listening to the radio is a rare pleasure for me.
I love tall radio and I have a sweet spot for Sean Moncrieff ever since his stint with Snotser on The End. Which was way past my bedtime back in the day.

Agree about Eamon Keane about being patronizing and he loves to hear to sound of his own voice. He always tells us why the topic is important when we're able to decide that for ourselves. Clearly sees himself as the next Gay Byrne but I don't think he's in that category, yet anyway. News at 1 is much better.

As for Newstalk's morning programme, I like the male presenter, Ger Gilroy, but I dislike Claire Byrne who is too opinionated. The interviews in the morning last about 2 minutes sometimes, it's like a contest to fit in as many interviews as possible. They're trying too hard to be different to Morning Ireland which is a lot stiffer and formulaic. I think with a few more years it could be a good programme. (replace Claire Byrne with a less opinionated presenter).

George Hook seems to talk a lot as well and sometimes answers the question when he's asking it. But Mary Wilson hasn't settled at all. I like Matt Cooper's programme the most.

Joe Duffy is great in the afternoon, always topical, sometimes controversial and very amusing at times.

I can't ever seem to pick up Newstalk, so I can't comment. I like radio 1 except for Derek Mooney () and, while often funny, sometimes Liveline can be a bit ridiculous at times. Local radio can be good but sometimes they get bogged down discussing non stories.

    Today FM's "Last Word"
    Clare FM's "Morning Focus"
    Live 95's "Limerick Today"

That's my 3.....I spent a few days listening to NewsTalk when it came on first but once the novelty/curiosity wore off it seemed like it was just another Dublin station broadcasting nationwide - same issue that I have with RTE Radio 1.

After years of hopping between Newstalk ~ RTE 1 ~ 2 FM ~ Today FM ~ East Coast, Q102, etc, etc I have discovered that my New Radio plugs directly into the NTL (FM) wall socket ~ nice :)

Now I listen nto BBC Radio One ~ BBC Radio 2 ~ BBC Radio 3 ~ BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 5, etc, etc etc ......

Obviously Radio 4 & Radio 5 are the 'Discussion Stations'

    What a relief.

Agree with you there 100%, can be very annoying. Do Newstalk have more ads than the other talk stations?

This is a very annoying habit in any interviewer, must be worse for the interviewee though.

I like Pat Kenny, he be "sober" but I will usually be interested in about two-thirds of the content.

For weekend mornings I really like Marian Finucane and Eamon Dunphy's shows on RTE One.

I agree with you on 'discussion content' maybe, but doesnt Marians voice get to you sometimes? One minute she is a bass baritone & the next miunte her voice is several octaves higher like a soprano, and as for Dunphy, am I the only one who thinks he slurs his words occassionally & sounds slightly sloshed

Its the "TANK YOU INDEED" that gets me with her and many other of the RTE brigade.

I'm a newstalk listener but, as was mentioned in previous posts, Brenda Power keeps yakin on about the same old stuff and George Hook does me head in. But I reckon the mornin show is the best around Ger Gilroy is excellent, way better than dunphy was, the man couldn't string two sentences together in the mornings :). Moncrief is brilliant and the sports show is a good laugh in the evenings.
