if you want to put normal files on it......one way of doing it is to install the AFP server through installer

once done you can wifi into the ipod and copy files to it

iTunes will only copy over itunes content

    Thanks babypink, i should elaborate.

Im trying to transfer over a (legal) ROM file (the freeware version of beneath a steel sky) to ScummVM.

Sorry im not too tech savvy navigating the iphone, what do you mean by wifi into the ipod? As in download and install AFP?

    k......here's how you do it.

    - open installer
    - go to network category
    - choose AFPd (its the first in the list) and install
    - reboot iPhone
    - get iPhone WiFi IP address from the network list in settings (tap the blue arrow beside the network name)
    - in Finder hit CMD+k
    - enter afp://ip.of.your.iphone/
    - enter the following credentials.. username: root password: alpine
    - your iphone should now be mounted on your desktop for you to browser through

as for adding the ROM for scrummvm....i believe that you have to put the ROM into a new folder and then just copy that folder anywhere on the iphone. ScrummVM will ask you to navigate to the ROM location when you go into it.

P.S. AFPd has a settings pane that lets you turn the server on and off at will....handy when on non-secure wifi networks as you don't want people getting at your iphone

How do you change the root password?

changing root on 1.1.4 causes a reboot loop....not cool

there is a way to do it - convoluted however, it involves using Cydia - an installer alternative.

    - in installer add http://apptapp.saurik.com/ as a source
    - install the Cydia Packager (system category)
    - install Fake BSD subsystem (system category)
    - in Cydia, install Mobile Terminal
    - ssh into your iphone using the alpine password: ssh -l root ip.of.your.iphone
    - change password be entering the following: passwd
    - enter your new password & confirm it
    - done

NB the -l is a lower case L
