here is what the RSA said when i asked the question

"Because of the different designs of cars, trucks, buses, etc, no particular position is specified for `L` Plates.
The Regulations require that such vehicles should have displayed on them plates or signs bearing the letter `L` not less than 15 centimetres high in red on a white ground, in clearly visible vertical positions to the front and rear of the vehicle.
In practice, the `L` Plates should not be placed on any window where they interfere with the view of either the driver or the tester.
The recommended location is on the boot and bonnet where a vertical surface is available for the purpose.
Please note that transparent `L` Plates are not acceptable.
Note also that `L` Plates which have the white border trimmed away are also not acceptable.
    Kind regards."

Right hand drive cars: If you're inside the car, in the driver seat, facing straight ahead:

Front Windscreen: Top left hand side, right up into the corner.

Rear Windscreen: Drivers side, directly behind you, as low into the corner as you can go.

+1, The amount of cars i've seen with the front L plate on the drivers side right infront of the drivers face is unreal, how someone could say to themselves..."hmm where to put them...i know!"

I think its funny when you see people with the L plates in the middle of the front windscreen just where the rear view mirror is.

Although my favourite is the people who drive around with the L on backwards.

Seen a car in the carpark in work yesterday with an L place, upside down and slap bang in the middle of the back window!

  • Get magnetic L plates..

Means you put one on the bonnet, one on the boot.

    No visual impact on driver.

I had mine on the windscreen/back window. Had to use sellotape and glue  but it did the trick.

one thing. make sure the entire sign can be clearly seen - my instructor who helped me pass told me to leave the plates as I had them - if your L plates are partly obscured by, for example, the section of blue tint at the top of some windscreens, the tester might refuse to take you out with it.
