I've decided that I'm gonna work me hole off for a while in the summer so I can get me Jackson RR and a good amp and I've decided on a Peavey Valve King head and the 412 cab

    Head - http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/peavey-valve-king-head/68967
    Cab - http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/peavey-valve-king-412-slant/69174

It works out at around 630 euros. I'm just wondering would I be better getting a better head and skimping on the cab? Like get a harley benton or something like that. I don't know too much about this stuff as I've only recently started focusing on guitar and I've never owned anything bigger than a combo.

    Thanks

There's not that much sense in going for a seperate head and cab for that kind of money. The Peavey Valve King is very much the lower end of the spectrum, and for the price, you could get a far better 1x12 tube combo, like a Peavey Classic. Stretch your budget a bit further, or go second hand, you could nab an Engl Thunder, which would be a far, far better amp.

I'm all for big stacks, but for the budget, a combo would be a much better choice.

Id agree with KH, if you're on a tight budget, its usually much better value to go for a combo rather than a head and cab. A 2x12 (or even 1x12) combo has loads of projection, I can't really see it being 'not enough' for you tbh.

Well I've decided this is the amp I'm gonna have forever (hopefully) so I've no problem upping the budget, so I'll have another little look around and see if I can find anything pretty

You'd want to be looking for something a hell of a lot better if it's the amp you're going to have forever, the Valvekings are really only begginer/intermediate kind of amps, "My first tube amp" kind of deals.

What kind of style would you be playing, we could recommend something more suiting?

Ah right I see. I play hard rock/punk/metal whatever ya wanna call it. I need an amp that has killer distortion, a great tone and is loud as fùck basically.

Depending on how far you want to go budget wise, you should go into some music shops around Dublin, see if you can test drive a Peavey 6505 head, ENGL Fireball or such like. Maybe even see if you get lucky and get a Mesa Dual Rectifier second hand?

The Valve Kings have absolute ****e distortion tbh, so I'd say avoid.

Sounds like a Marshall JCM800. Original, or one of the good clones, though probably not so much the Marshall reissue. Out of your budget though, unfortunately.

That looks the business alright, and in my budget. Is there anywhere ya can listen to samples of different amps?

Sound clips aren't as good as trying the thing for yourself, and Instrumental in Dublin stock ENGL, so I'd definitely say go in and give it a whirl before you decide anything. Trust your ears tbh.

Oh I didn't know Instrumental stocked them, thanks I'll go in and see if they'll let me give it a whirl alright

Don't forget to try out a few different amps as well. I'm a big Engl fanboy, but I'm not going to solely recommend it, even if it's just to nail down your choices, try something else to contrast it.

I know Bombidol will be roaring 6505 from the rooftops any time soon, so give one of those a whirl too if you can.

You'll pick up a used TSL combo for the same kind of money you were looking at. I wouldn't consider it a 'high-quality' amp at all (im no fan of modern Marshalls tbh) but it'd definitely be a step above a ValveKing.

Then, if you were looking at stretching your budget, yeah, theres definitely some ENGLs you could look at.

A grand might buy you a used Mesa/Boogie combo of some sort if you're patient and look around. That's what i'd go for if it was at all possible.

With the dollar in the state it is, you could probably get a used recto for a grand. Serious win! :pac:

I couldn't agree more, its a great time to buy from the US.

Sterling is doing sh1te too, keep an eye on the likes of coda-music, they often have used amps for very good prices, and ship to Ireland quite cheaply.

Hey OLP. If yer willing to spend alot of cash on a rig your gonna be gigging with then don't get a combo anyway. Ya could of course look for second hand heads and cabs and save yerself alot of money. If ya look around ya could get a real bargain. Just take some time before ya decide what to get. Dont end up spending a load of cash on a rig ya wont be happy with in a year or so. Do you go to punk gigs around Dublin? I've seen ya post on eirecore. If so check out the gear that bands ya see and like the sound of.

Aye I'm always at Dublin punk gigs and I've seen some lads with some pretty killer gear alright. Just gonna work me hole off during the summer so when I do find what I want I can get it there and then, gonna keep me eye out for second hand stuff aswell
