    Hi Guys.
I will be doing the hdip in Cork next year, teaching English and History. I was just wondering if anyone could recommend any books or other resources that might help in preparation. Any suggestions from psychology to self-defence would be welcome!

    Hi,
I'm going to be doing hdip in UCC in the coming year too said I just thought I'd say hi. I 'll be teaching history too. Germans my other subject but couldnt find a school that needed me to teach that! Have you received any info about Garda vetting yet?

I've no tips about useful books I'm afraid. I think the first time we have to go into a class we need to be really scary! I'm going back to my old school and I remember hdips were treated atrociously! A lot of them quit!! There was never any respect for the ones who cried or asked other teachers to come into the class to regain control!

    Hi to you too!

I'll be in Douglas comm. What school did you get? From what I understand, especially for the first few months there will always be a teacher in the classroom with us, so I wouldnt worry too much.

    I might see you around!

I got Bishopstown comm but the principal recommended I keep looking cos class sizes arent great and I can only teach one of my subjects there. Theres nowhere else taking hdips though so Id say I'll be staying there. I'm going to have 2 first year classes and 2second year classes. Theres no history offered to 5th years next years and the teacher was out a lot recently so shes going to keep the 6th years & 3rd years for herself. Theyre going to create a transition year history class to make up enough hours for me!

During the interview with the Principal, I did ask about the Garda vetting and he said not to worry about it until August. I'd imagine it's something we'll need for the start of the course. What History subjects are you doing now in UCC?

Oh no! You're my job competition! I'm kinda hoping that there aren't that many maths teachers...

officially, applied maths, but I'm expecting that there's not too many places for that. I'm going to try to push my luck with physics or science.

    Hi,
I'm not in UCC this year, finished MA last year and started doing phd but decided to do hdip instead then. Couldnt take 4 more years and I think Id prefer teaching!

By the way - about garda vetting - anyone know how long is a certificate valid? I got it for teaching a year and a half ago. Will I need a fresh one for the hdip?

Hey what college course did you do to be able to teach biology and maths? Science with both options for at least 3 years?

    Don't do any summer reading.
You'll be doing enough of it next year.

Enjoy your summer and de-stress while you can :)

I'm not doing a HDip but I do wanna become a teacher so i looked it up and found this

    http://www.teachingcouncil.ie/garda_vetting/default.asp?NCID=363

it says it takes 10 weeks!

I agree with the last poster. Relax this summer because you won't have a chance to come September. If you find yourself really bored though, you could try "Essential Teaching Skills" by Chris Kyriacou. Everyone doing the dip will read this and it's quite cheap!

Perrott, E. ((1982). Effective Teaching: A Practical Guide to Improving Your Teaching, New York: Longman is another good one.

Best of luck next year. It's a tough year, but also enjoyable

Just finished my Dip in UL.
Everything mentioned so far good but also...

Know your exams... SEC Exam Archive

    Know your curriculum... NCCA
    http://www.ncca.ie/index.asp?locID=241&docID=-1

    Teachnology matters... TeachNet, NCTE
    http://www.teachnet.ie/home/default.asp?NCID=1

Then ask, what is education anyway???...

    School Types...

Different Dips seem to focus on different reading materials so will refrain from mentioning mine. Best of luck.
