    Hi there,

I was trying to find some information on the web about Primark. What would be the best way to get Primark clothes for sale to Romania?
If I set up a business here, can I buy clothes from Penneys and export them for sale to Romania? Can I legally function in Romania??? Will I be able to get clothes on invoice from Penneys to deduct vat, etc...???? What kind of tax will I have to pay????

    Edit: Does Primark do franchises???

    Thanks,

    Magic

Loads of questions, commercial, legal and tax.

I wouldn't think primark would sell to you in wholesale quantities. It's just not what they do. If they want to enter the Romanian market, they will do it. They might want a partner or they might not. I don't think it's the way they do business though. But if you are serious about it, why not talk to them? You would need to be thinking pretty big though.

On the other hand, there are other people who will. You really need to get into the right circuit of buyers and sellers.

I don't think primark'll give a vat receipt, but they might.

You would have to register your business in romania in some form. The least bureaucratic is supposed to be a branch office, but you need legal advice in romania. You will certainly need to register for VAT there.

Thank you very much for your reply.

If I register as a business, could I go into Penneys and just buy stuff from the shop and get an invoice of some kind? Of course, I shouldn't be paying any vat, am I right? Vat as far as I am aware, should be paid by the last, that would be customers in Romania.

I am surprised Primark didn't open stores any place other than Spain....
They would do fantastic business in Romania.

As for contacting them, I emailed them a couple of years ago about the Romanian market opportunity and never heard a thing back!!!

    Thanks again,
    Magic

You are right re the vat in principle. But in practice, it would be different.

They might not give you th vat invoice. if they did, you'd be claiming the vat back from the revenue.

emailing in to the website is not a great way of opening contract negotiations.

    magic,

why waste your time with Primark ?

just contract a Chinese maufacturer to make clothing for you to your specification and sell it yourself in Romania. Your margins will be hugely (and I mean hugely) better.

Shipping from Ireland to Romania is going to cost far more than China to Romania

The problem for magic is building up the same relationships and expertise in purchasing as primark already have. This is time-consuming and expensive to do (although probably worth doing if he/she's serious.)

    Antoino

Its not any more difficult than the logistics of setting up a franchise / licensed Primark opertaion in Romania would be. There are many mnay large clothing manufactors in china dying to setup links with Western retailers. And the clothing will be about a fifth of the prices Primark would be charging wholesale !

If the OP is eserious about it then the most profitable (and only real viable way) it to import directly. Just find out who Primark deal in the far east with and approach them directly. Once you can provide bank guarantees they are hardly going to shun your business.

    Good luck with it

They won't shun his business for sure if he has the few bob. The issue is identifying the good manufacturers, who have reasonable ethics and getting them to give you a quality product. Also, having a fashionable product for next season is important too. You need to know what to ask for.

    Hi lads,

thanks a mill for your replies....I was kind of busy the last two weeks, I didn't have time to check the thread...

I did speak with the manager in Penneys, he told me they wouldn't sell large amounts to me and they wouldn't issue vat receipts. His advice was to contact directly the Operations Manager in Dublin and have a chat with them...which I didn't so far (I had difficulties finding out a phone number for them, since they're not listed in the Yellow Pages)...

The idea of finding a manufacturer in China is a nice one, it never crossed my mind...seems quite a good one though, I'll do some research and I'll give it some thought...

Thanks again for all your input into this thread,

    Cheers,
    Magic

i don't think magicEye was succesfull in his Primark quest cause i'm from Romania and there's still no Primark here. But i'm looking forward to it :p

I doubt Primark would have any interest iunless they were doing it themselves. One would be much better off approaching the Vero Moda / Jack & Jones Group and applying for a franchise. Romania is crying out for a fashonable yet affordable clothing chain.
