Integrating public transport into peoples' everyday lives

    Eliminating the reasons to use a car every day, one by one, would help reduce traffic congestion, pollution, energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and journey times for essential road traffic.

    Shopping is a major excuse for car use because many/most shopping centres are poorly served by public transport. The daily routine of commuting to/from work usually involves a stop for shopping en route.

    Zurich has been planned to make it easy to shop without a car.

    The Hauptbahnhof (main station) has a large shopping centre on three levels with supermarkets, dry cleaners, restaurants, post office, banks, pharmacies, books, flowers, gadget shops – virtually everything one needs for daily shopping under one roof, integrated with the hub of the suburban and intercity rail system, the tram system and everything else. Making it easy to get domestic things done on the way to work or home while using public transport.

    There is another large shopping centre at Zurich airport railway station – also with everyday shopping including a large supermarket. And at all these locations virtually all the shops are Swiss and local – not a Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Aldi or over-priced “convenience store” in sight - (Minimising food-kms in more ways than one). Typlically you’ll find a Migros (www.migros.ch/fr/) and/or Coop (www.coop.ch) supermarkets both of which are owned by their customers and employees.

    Each suburban node in Zurich (eg the equivalent of Ballsbridge, Rathmines, Douglas or Ballincollig in the case of Dublin or Cork) has a cluster of shops along its “main street”. Feeder buses take people from near their homes/offices to these nodes where they can shop or connect with trams or suburban rail (Sbahn). Buses don’t compete with trams and rail – instead they feed them with passengers – and because the buses are only servicing suburbia, the bus system invariably runs on time to synchronise with rail or tram movements and people’s shopping needs.
