Ping Iorns

Thinking strongly about changing to Ping.

Have Taylor Mayde TP which are great but they give you nothing if you're slightly off center. Definately made for a low handicapper/pro.

Can anyone recommend a set of Ping iorns best suited to a 10/12 handicapper. I've never owned a set before and don't know where to start.
I remember the old Ping Eye Iorns, is there an equivelant these days ??
I would be willing to spend up to about €500/€600.

    Thanks

The three main products in the Ping Iron catalogue at the moment are:

    - G10
    - i10
    - Rapture

The G10 is the most common model, designed for all levels of ability. Very forgiving iron with an oversized head and fairly wide sole.

The i10 is the more compact version of the G10. It has a narrower sole, smaller cavity and less offset. The advantage is you get much better feel off the ball, and can work it around a bit more.

The Rapture is similar in look and design to the G10. However the Rapture has a titanium insert in the face, which increases the MOI (energy transfer from clubface to ball, like a driver) to increase distance and forgivness. It is more expensive than the G10.

There is another model, the S58, but this is aimed at the single figure handicapper, as it is not the most forgiving of irons.

My advise, go to your local authorised ping fitting centre and get a recommendation. Personally, the G10 or i10 are what I would recommend. When trying the i10, just make sure you can achieve a good flight consistantly with the long irons.

Forgot to mention, regarding price. You might pick up a set of G10's 4-SW (8 Irons) for around the €600 mark, but may have to spend a bit more. You could pick up a slightly used set of them for about €400 and would be just as good as long as they are your spec.

The Ping I5 might also be worth a look.
My brother has a set and they are really nice irons.
From what I've read they are more forgiving than the I10.

Since they were replaced by the I10 you should easily be able to find a set in your price range.

Used them for the 1st time yesterday.
I'm never been more impressed with a set of clubs before.
4 birdies (which is very rare from me !!)
So mush eaiser to play with and so much more accurate.
    Very very happy with them.

Great to hear Dublin Spur - what do you play off? Four birdies is a great day by anyone's standards.

    Well done!

Getting your handicap is such a pain in the ass, and then waiting for the committee to approve it, hope ur place is better than where i got mine, it was a few years ago now, but it took a while.

    Ping make great irons.
I had a set of Ping Eye 2's for years and they were great.
The shafts got rusty over time though and others broke.
I switched to a set of Lynx Black Cats (2004 model) a few years ago and they are a very good club too.
I must explore the possibility of re shafting my Pings though.
