No its ok to trap magpies the call bird must have food and water(by law) and be sheltered to survive bad weather(for your own sake).

yeah i know they have to be fed and sheltered ..
i was talking to a lad today about building a larsen trap
and he said try hide it a bit that it is illegal to trap them and he had a licence through his gun club to do it ?????

Have one ,use one. Sorry if my grammars/meaning aint up to scratch, but whats the point in having it and not using it are ya gonna sit in your shed and look at it:eek:. I have a larsen trap and use it. I dont have and have never heard of a license to use one. But im open to correction.

Have a look at "Home made Larsen traps" for information.

It really depends on why you are trapping Magpies and Greycrows. Read the derogation and know your reason for killing them. E.g. When you are protecting game, livestock, crops, etc,etc it is perfectly legal. Read the derogation!! Have your defence sorted!;)

Is there a link to the derogation? (I presume it's a Statutory Instrument) Might be handy to have around.

Under a active magpie next with some nice bits meat\bread, ensure it is visible to the nest and set under the cover of darkness

Do you already have a call bird in it or are you trying to catch the call bird?
If it's the latter you would be better off getting one from outside your local area because mags are very territorial and wont put up with intruders .
If your lookin for one i could probably sort you out with one.

Sorry to hijack lads but if anybody has a few dead magpies (preferably with skins intact) I'd be interested in taking them off your hands to practice taxidermy on.

Where are you placing it I have good luck a couple of feet out from a hedge or near a tree they frequent. Another good spot is near a tree adjcent a road. I bait the trap with scraps from the butchers a couple of bits on top but more in the trap. I don't find the octangonal traps as good as a double cage galvanised or a home made job (see my other posts) I think the size of the trap cage puts them off (only an opinion)

We used to use stuffed snow geese back home like that. You could get a few seasons out of them if they are hung up to dry after every hunt. Worked a treat!

On the waterproofing issue : I suppose a good drop of vegetable oil on a stuffed bird and a bit of rubbing in might do the trick as long as you don't put it up in a dusty field. A drop of shampoo and water to wash it all of after a while... .

How would putting a couple of wires in a dead bird and injecting the carcass with formoldewhatyoumecallit work I wonder ?

    Hi,

just to keep you up to date - anybody involved in taxidermy needs to have a Wildlife Dealer's Licence available from the N.P.W.S.
