Was really considering getting into this game. I played the single player campaign for a short while but never tried the multiplayer mode. I was watching a video of the new expansion on IGN, the new British army and Panzer division look really awesome.

I was wondering if many Irish players played this game online and if so where and when? I think i will start playing after my exams are over.. Counter strike is hindering them enough atm.

Great game. i just got the expansion and am really enjoying the campaign at the moment. One thing i have noticed about opposing fronts, there is a pretty big performance hit. its still very playable but i notice it when i swivel the camera around during an intense firefight with loads of water and particle effects in sight.
I think the expansion added a lot to it visually, tell me if you dont agree Sephiroth but i find the effects look a lot better and there seems to be more "stuff" around to make it the place look lived in. (and get blown up)

i too have been looking to try a bit of online Coh, just want to get my head around the new armies first so i know what im up against.

I am playing the multiplayer part quite a bit at the moment - to be honest, I'm getting quickly fed up with C&C Kanes Wrath (the expansion has hideously broken the whole game & its sense of fun). CoH has genuine depth & actually requires micro-management and skill on the part of the player, not build-orders and unit spam. Each unit feels useful and worthy in its own right & has a great sense of satisfaction when you pull of manoeuvres and captures. The "retreat" and cover systems are genius ideas; finding that perfect cover position is a great little moment as you watch the enemy back off and retreat.

I have played some truly colossal see-saw games against players where it has literally become a pitched battle over scant resources. Mostly I play British; although I'm not a turtler per se, I enjoy the range their range of units & it makes a change from the usual American centric action. The only problem is that the "Opposing Fronts" sides aren't really meant to be played against the Vanilla sides, and vice versa. The balance in that respect is all wonky imo. In my case, the Brits really struggle against the Whermacht

It's a crying shame the game didn't sell - maybe it was simply too complex for the average base-building RTS player, or that people are truely sick of ww2 games (I was but played anyway), but it's a real slowburner.

If anyone's interested in some games, give us a buzz; I'm usually in the "Dublin" chatroom & the avatar's "Pixelburp"

how do you find the army balance in a 2vs2 game with the original and new armies?

What in your opinion is better :
1.Setting up a line of defence and wait for resources to bulid up so that u can build a huge army and attack all at once
2.Use blitzkrieg tactics and attack at the start with all of ur units leaving nothing to defend ur base

Dunno about 2v2 uglyjohn as I have only ever played 1v1, but forums I read suggest that a US/UK combo is nigh on unstoppable with some half decent players.

As for stategy, well as British I usually put out a Bren straight off & send it up to block off initial land grabs by the opponent, then pile out the infantry & Lietenants to capture as much ground as possible. I try to get a pre-decided chokepoint & set up defences there; usually the first to build should be a mortar position. The brits' mortar can totally lock down a group of flags & a general area with ease (with trenches to stop infantry rushes). After that I try and expand and lock down the rest of the map, building up my command points. All the while of course I'm teching up to get sappers and the captain out. Depending on the map I set down a couple of the Brits AT gun in key positions to make "kill zones" as they say. After that I wait for the inevitable tank rush.

The best British tactic should be like their "creeping barrage" attack; slowly move across the map (though rush at the start with recon troops to grab a centre chokepoint), swallowing up location & resources with overwhelming firepower. 1 on 1 though, British units kinda suck.

I prefer the line of defence and them steamroll rather than blitzkrieg, in practice though the online play requires both.

I cannot praise COH enough. It is the most balanced and fun RTS I have ever played. The addition of the new armies did change it quite a bit, personally I think that online play with the expansion requires a bit more skill because the new armies are quite powerful compared to the old Axis vs Americans caper.

One of the great things about the new armies is they play best with the other army. An example: the Panzer elite work brilliantly with a blitzkrieg general because of the Bergtiger and the ability to repair the two deployed tigers with nearly every infantry squad.

COH is one game that I will always have a soft spot for because of the amount of fun I had playign it when it came out first.

I hope you enjoy it :)

Do ye prefer a group of specialised infantry (eg. Rangers,MG and mortor) or wait and get a few tanks because i found that i can quite easily defeat an opponent in a long game without even building a tank

    Tis a good game alright.

Its getting there with regards balance. New patch out on Tuesday which hopefully is gonna fix the current 2 major balance issues namely the American strafing run and M8 armoured car with its crazy evasion factor. The patch looks like fixing some map imbalances as well.

Opposing Fronts did introduce a hefty performance hit with its implemtation of weather. Something the community has been quite vocal about. It does not really add anything to the game and often causes players to lag so most people would like to have an option to turn it off.

As for faction balance Opposing Fronts 2 factions where orginally OP compared to the vanilla factions. I have heard the PE got nerfed quite hard though and its Fallschimjaeger are no longer the killing machines they once where. Brits seem to the strongest faction currently but I find there play style pretty boring so I stick with Wehr.

I think in 2v2 its nots true that any particular combination of army is unbeatble but depends on player skill and the map. For example Wolfheze favours the players in the south. Its also a small map so it would not suit duel panzer elite players who's strengths would be more suited to a bigger map.
