I was just going to start a thread on that very story! Boy loses perfectly healthy kidney, which I presume no one got, and now finds himself needing a kidney, which was available but they probably got rid of it because they thought it was the bad one!

A young child has had the wrong kidney removed at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.

According to the hospital, this was a ‘significant and regrettable medical error’ and it has apologised to the family of the child.

It is understood that the mistake led to the young child’s healthy kidney being removed instead of the diseased one. The child may now have to undergo regular dialysis unless a donor kidney can be found.

It is unclear when the mistake was noticed but the hospital has launched a full internal investigation into the error.

The child has since been discharged from the hospital, however it is understood that the child’s family are happy to remain using Our Lady’s for follow-up care.

The case has been described as 'very alarming' by the Labour Party. According to the party's health spokesperson, Jan O'Sullivan, the parents of the child, as well as the parents of other children with similar conditions, need reassurance that such an error will not happen again.

"While I would accept that private aspects of this case must remain private, any findings of an investigation that indicates that there may have been system failures or other shortcomings, should be published. If there are broader lessons to be learned they should be made public", Ms O'Sullivan added.
