just a few questions about getting a rifle licence.

Im thinking about getting a .22lr for some rabbit shooting. Iv had a look on google.ie but iv still a few questions.

Do I need to get a gun safe or is it optional - ill prob get one anyway to be safe but is it a must?

Do I need permission from a land owner to shoot and be a gun club member or is just one or the other ok.

If getting permission from a farmer/s who much land must I get permission to shoot on e.g 10 acres, 100 acres.

Am I right in saying I buy my gun first then apply for the licence and pick up the gun when the licence comes through?

And lastly roughly how long does it take for a licence for a .22 rifle to be accepted?

    Any help would be great,
    Thanks guys:pac:

It's entirely at the discretion of your Superintendent, but it really is regarded as a de facto requirement, and it would be silly to have a rifle without having it stored safely.

One or the other will do fine. You will need permission of multiple landowners. Two or three is what's usually required, but get three anyway to be safe. Chances are you'll amass quite a few more just for places to shoot, but three will do for the application anyway.

There's no real set limit, but you realistically are looking at about fifty acres to shoot on as a general guideline. Like a lot of things, this isn't legislated for, but that's the sort of thing they'll like.

You'll select a rifle and agree a price with a dealer, and pay a deposit. He'll then give you the serial number and proof of purchase, which you'll need for your application. He'll hold the gun for you while you use the information he's given you to apply for it. When your cert is granted, you return with the cert and pay the balance, assuming that's what you've agreed with the dealer, some expect it after a certain time, regardless of whether the cert's been granted by then. Then you go home with your shiny new rifle. Simple really.

It varies hugely from place to place, depening on your Superintendent. A rifle as a first cert tends to take anything from two to eight weeks as a blanket estimate. Some take a lot longer, but few take less than two weeks. I wouldn't go making too many calls before about a month has passed anyway.

    Good luck, and have fun.

Go to your local gun shop first, after some careful selection you'll place a deposit on a gun prob around 10%.
The shop owner will provide you with the Serial Number from the firearm which you will bring to your local Garda Stn when applying for you FAC(firearm cert)

If you intend to hunt you will require the permission of three land owners, i suppose they should all be average size farmers (about 80 acres each).
You will require the folio numbers for all 3.

You also require a gun safe its seems to be the law but i will help you sleep easier at night..

Its not necessary to be in a gun club but it might help if you have any issues effecting your suitability to own a firearm.. Its not a legal requirement but it prob money well spent for new comers to the sport.

You don't really need the folio numbers for a .22lr. They're only mandatory when applying for deer licences.
