Is it just me or are film coming out on DVD much quicker, not so long ago you would be waiting 6 months or longer, these days they are out in a few weeks, it's hardly left the cinema and it's out on DVD, I'd imagine this leads to less people going to the cinema as they will just hold out a couple of weeks and watch the DVD

Ive noticed they are hitting SBO a lot sooner.

The assassination of Jesse James was on SBO 3-4 days after being released on DVD

Probably an attempt to minimize DVD piracy and illegal downloads. The sooner they can get the DVD out there the less downloading there's likely to be. It's much like the way British/Irish tv channels used to be able to hold off on new episodes of US shows for months and months, but when the download revolution began they were soon forced to basically have eps on tv within weeks of the US screenings. People here didn't even realise there was midseason breaks in US shows until the leadtime fell to zero and was unable to mask this fact anymore :)

Plus I understand that movie companies make more money from DVD sales/rentals than they do from the actual cinema runs so I'm sure they're eager to get the product out there asap anyway.

Thats true pighead and would have been the first thing i said as well piracy.
but i suppose another reason might be to encourage retail spending, it might not be anti piracy reasons but more the fact that there isa genweral downturn in retail spending in this country, people buying from non irish websites and apparently buying cloathing online is popular amung irish teens so the retail stores suffer and releasing DVD's to retail stores sooner will stop people buying from online stores selling US DVD's - allot like you said about the US shows comming to irish stores sooner.

On another note who here remembers how long it took jurassic park to come to VHS? from when it was first in the cinema? it was in the cinema a good year wasent it? then another year or so before VHS maybe?
