Energy Source on a Marathon

I am running my first marathon in Belfast in May. I was wondering what is the best thing to carry with me on the day for energy. I have a few packs of the Gels. Are these the best thing you can take or is there better?

I run 15 Miles yesterday without taking any energy supplements or (maybe stupidly) water and felt great but I am sure the extra miles on marathon day will take a bigger effort. Some people say 20 miles is the half way point as the last 6.5 is the hardest. There is plenty of water stations on the route and two energy stations but I have no idea what the energy stations will have.

    Thanks in advance

Have you taken the gels before while running, and if so do they suit you? I find them great during marathons; a lot of people feel nauseous taking them. Plenty of folk use jelly babies, although they can be difficult to swallow after 20 miles. Best advice is to stick to what you know, and not try something strange during the marathon.

ps yes, its a race of two halves, more like 16+10, so don't go too fast the first bit and you can let loose the second. Best of luck.

i usually only take on water in races over 10 miles (unless in summer/very hot)but for the marathon i took water from every station bar 1 as 26.2 miles is a different matter all together and by the time you are really thirsty dehydration may have already slowed you down.
i brought 3 gels as well and used them on 1 of my training runs just to see if they would make me sick or upset my stomach. i suppose the key is to have no surprises on race day as in dont eat ,drink or wear anything that you are not 100% sure about and have not used in your preperation

Thanks for the advise guys. One thing keeps poping up is stick to what you know. I have used the gels before and feel good taking them so might take a few on the day. I always wear the same gear when running so am well use to it.

    Cheers again guys

Connemara was my first marathon, it was also my first time taking energy gels. Brought three tubes with me, only took two in the end. Felt a bit queasy after the second one, but that could have been the two mini Mars bars I stuffed into me just before hand too. I think they must have made some sort of difference, because I lasted all the way, whereas two weeks perviously I had gone for a 21 mile run with the only energy being from a Kit Kat I had halfway (my longest run in my training regime) and afraid I more or less walked the last 3 miles.
