Boston is a great city man. I lived there for 6 months. There is an abundance of things to do but really all depends on what you are interested in.

The ‘T’ is the Boston subway and will get you most places. The lines are represented by different colous.

Sports: You got baseball (red sox), basketball (Celtics), American football (Patriots) and hockey (Bruins). Not sure what will be on in July though, so best look up each teams web site and try get tickets now as it’s tough closer to the time. (green and red line, except for Patriots games)

The North End is the Italian section of Boston and has some of the best Italian food you’ll ever eat. If you’re a seas food lover you’ll be most impressed. (I think is the orange line)

A trip around MIT is interesting. (red line)

There is Whale Watching that you can get from the Aquarium close to down town. (Blue Line)

You can go to the science museum and take ‘duck tours’ which are tours around Boston in duck shaped buses/boats.

There is ice skating, Hanging out in Boston Common, A trip to the top floor of the Prudential Centre.

Cape Cod is good fun for beaches but that’s all I really did there.

What are you interested in doing? Any preferences?

Trying to piggy-back on this question as am also heading to Boston region at the end of August. Personally I'm looking for outdoorsy stuff, like hiking in the mountains, activities like rafting etc if possible?? Any ideas??

All that OmegaRed is good advice. I wsa over there last summer and had a ball. We hired a car and drove north into New Hampshire, have a look at http://www.visitwhitemountains.com/ It might help. It was on a map I had.
One suggestion I would offer is, Get the SatNav with the hire car. It is well worth it. We went all over the place and never once ( well once) got lost!
Also, It will be quite warm, by Irish standards !!

heard the whale watching is good.so that will definitely be on the list.unfortunately the Red Sox are the only team playing at that time of the year.NFL not back til mid august, NBA will be finished by then and the Bruins are already out of the NHL Playoffs. We've decided that we probably will take in a Red Sox game.just for the atmosphere

as i said we're renting a car so distance of things is not too much hassle.we're heading down to Springfield for Six Flags.we're up for anything pretty much so all suggestions are welcome.have to say though that this is being treated as a real holiday and therefore much R+R will be involved so nothing too strenuos will be done.

will prob do most of that stuff suggested by OmegaRed.we're only in Boston itself for the first 4 days and then we pick up the car.

    thanks for suggestions

God damn it all this talk is making me miss that city so much!:(

OP youll love Boston, spent a summer there a few years back - its a great city, theres lots to do apart from drinking. (plenty of that to do too!)

yea red sox will be the only team playing round that time. games are good craic but the tickets are v hard to get depending on how well theyre doing. but try on various websites like craigslist or i got them on acetickets.com a few years back, they were on a pretty dismal run at the time tho.

the whale watching is supposed to be good, theres a pretty good aquarium with an imax theatre also. think its on the blue line. the JFK presidential library is nearby there too i think but i never made it there.

definetly go to 6 flags, some amazing rides but def avoid the weekend as it gets very busy. we went on a saturday and massive queues coupled with massive hangovers meant we only went on one ride! theres around 10 or 12 rollercoasters alone i think. the superman and batman rides are the big two.

Take a walk around Cambridge, where MIT and Harvard are. Cambridge is just one side of the Charles river but technically its a different city to Boston. The trip up prudential tower is well worth i think. Take a stroll around Boston Common, and public gardens, Beacon Hill, Newbury St. (Boston's Grafton st. but much nicer, and way more exclusive shops if youre into that sort of thing)

Theres a walking tour of boston which is centred on the time of the revoloution, never did it but could be interesting.

Also head north to New Hampshire if you have a car and want some r & r. The place is amazing, lots of forests, lakes, rivers. Very relaxing and peaceful. Cant think of any of the places we went to but im sure any guide can point you in the right direction.

Again Cape Cod is quiet, nice beaches only an hour or two south of Boston. Really nice and relaxing, worth a day or two visit alright.

Theres loads of museums and galleries around the city aswell.

And if you want to chance your arm theres loads of bars in the city, try the more irish sounding ones, they might be sympathetic to an irish accent. In general boston bars are stricter on age than new york from what i remember though.

Anyway theres some ideas off the top of my head - theres loads to do in and around Boston.

did a j1 in boston last summer.theres loads to do, everyone else has pretty much covered everything i think.there really isnt much in salem to see to be honest.walked around for a few hours but it really is a sleepy little place.definately go to six flags on a WEEKDAY.superman is the best coaster ever.i found the jfk museum (redline south) to be really interesting and worth a visit.you can get tickets for baseball games outside fenway off touts and theres a few shops around fenway that sell any spare ones when a season ticket holder isnt going to the particular game.if you want to do some shopping the cambridge galleria was the best i found.abercrombie, american eagle, macys etc etc are all there.its across the river on the redline.a little further on the redline is harvard-worth a look around.
