Internet and PC problem...

OK, I had a PC for over two years, never had a problem with the internet (except when my provider was having trouble sof course)

It was Dell, had XP, erm.. etc. etc.

Anyway, Bought a new PC cos i wanted one that didnt move as slow. Its HP and has vista.

    Anyway,

My internet connections turns off randomly every now and again. I dont know what causes it, but i know i can sit here like an idiot waiting fo rit to work, and it wont.

The only thing that WILL fix it is restarting my PC.

So, my question is.. does anyone know why this is happening?

Its definitely a PC problem, not an internet or internet supplier problem.

it can happen up to 5 times a day and its a nuisance. ok, it only takes a minute or two to restart a PC, but i use ebay a lot and i just know it'll knock off in th elast few seconds of an auction :(

Besides, its a problem i shouldnt have on a brand new pc :(

    Anyone able to help?

Could be any number of things a virus perhaps?

Have you any anti virus software that you could run a scan with? If you can rule this out then it could hardware or an operating system problem. It could be as simple as your broadband connection settings. If it is still under warranty you could take it back to get it checked out fully.

Are you using wireless or ethernet?
I hear the 'wireless zero config' service has been known to jump ship on your wireless connection if it detects a different, stronger signal. (maybe a neighbours wifi that it can't logon to or something)
You might try disabling the wireless zero config temorarily to see if that's what's doing it.
Might be worth googling - "wireless zero config" random disconnections

Or if you're using ethernet, have a look at what the link lights are doing... could be anything from a dodgy cable to (I suppose) malware.

    Hi guys,

    Thanks.

I have AVG Free installed, and i have no viruses (i used to download loads of different crap on my old PC and never got a virus, so i trust AVG).

I'm with Irish Broadband. Modem and ethernet connection. The light that usually flashes to tell me im browsing the interweb pretty much either stops flashing or just dies when i lose the net. The only time in the last two years i've had any trouble with them was when they were having technical troubles. Up until switching PC, i never had this problem.

I got the PC on the 11/4/08 from Harvey Norman, so yeah, i could probably bring it back, but doing that is a lot of hassle i really don't want. :(

My old PC was Dell, this is HP, but i dont think that should make any difference at all.

    Sorry for the double post,

    i forgot to also mention,

Sometimes (usually when my internet connection dies) when i restart my PC.. it wont shut down.

It'll sit there saying its shutting down, but wont actually shut down.

I have to manually sturn it off by holding the power button, then when i turn it back on it gives me options of running it in safe mode etc.

By the way, both problems (internet loss and not shutting down) occurred about 5 minutes ago :(

Windows keeps telling me it cant diagnose the problem, to contact my Internet provider, but im determined that its a PC problem.
    :mad::confused:

do windows restore, 1st run sfc system file checker, sounds like you have spyware,or virus ,which have corrupted the windows system files so you cant shut down, copy documents /mp3s to folder backup, reinstalling windows will fix the problem, or restore to 3months,ago ,ie have you an old restore point be4 this problem re shut down ,happened.i doubt if theres any problem, with hardware or pc itself, its a corrupted windows install.download free avg antispware ,run full scan, and tthen antivirus scan.
