Pay review

Did a search for related threads for this and didn't find anything so...

I'm working in my (IT related) job for 7/8 months (first proper job after leaving college) - I was supposed to have a 6 month review but it was never looked at until I brought it up to my manager (I didn't bring it up due to fear on my part that I could be fired! Although I was never told I did a bad job, hardly ever late, etc etc)

When I started the job the salary had a range where the highest rate possible to be paid was 5k euro more than the bottom rate of pay, I didn't specify exactly how much I wanted and was given 2.5k over the basic pay (which I was happy with) .

I have a few questions - How do these reviews work? Am I made an offer or do I suggest an offer? Im in an assistants role at the moment (which is fine) although my job title reflects this - it has a "Junior" before it :).

Given that I am now trained into the job and am doing more in-depth work now, should I look for a promotion so the "Junior" comes off the title and ask to be put on the next payscale? or should I look for the extra 2.5k that I missed out on when I started ? or should I expect a percentage (if so,what?) and is a promotion unrealistic after 7/8 months?

    ^confused doesn't cover it!^

    thanks for your help :)

you would never be given any meaningfull promotion until at least a year

2.5 k seems fair but do you expect it to be back paid from the 6 month mark... you could tell them that you would do without the rise for now but you want the 5 k at the end of your first year... but dont phrase it like your telling them as thats a bad road to go down

That's good advice there - I wasn't sure but 7/8 months didn't seem like enough time in the job to be promoted (I got the impression today as well that even though I'm technically able, I need a better understanding of the business, which seems fair to me) . So maybe at my 1 yr review, I'll seek that out.

    Anybody else with an opinion?

The six month review - did they specify it was a salary increase review?

If I were you, I would make up a list of your accomplishments, and e-mail them on to your boss with a polite e-mail stating this is what you've done so far and you hope they will be considered when he is completing your review.

I reckon your raise will be 1k btw...

Why do you think that's all the op could get? It's very very little.

Thanks for the input, when I put in for the review, we chatted about what I've done for the six months and how I was finding it - also mentioned my success in cutting down the large amount of long term work since i got there to a much more manageable/ non-existent level. (am v proud of this lol :D)

1k doesnt appeal to me - maybe I should be brazen and ask for 3.5/4 and hope for 2/2.5 or maybe say I want a Christmas Bonus of 3k?

    That's what I was thinking! :)

Of course, 1k is better then a kick in the teeth but if I could get more....

In my experience, and I've had a few 6 month reviews :), it's only a small raise after 6 months.

The place where you work though could be totally different of course, but don't get your hopes up too high just in case!

I'll try not to get the hopes up too high, I'm just trying to decide whether I should ask for the remaining 2.5k (that the job pay scale maxed at originally) and say I am more technically able now, point out the cutting down of long term work etc. and hope for the best. Would people think this would be a positive thing to say or should I not mention the original job pay range?

On a rethink, a christmas bonus might not be the best option as I have another review in September/October....

I think there is no harm in asking for the 2.5k and hoping for the best. I would agree with you that with your experience you are worth it.

    Best of luck. :)

Thanks! I think I'll take the 2.5k approach now, doesnt hurt to ask :D

Velocitee, do let us know how you get on. I'm in a very similar situation, just out of college and have my first 6 months done there last week. I was thinking of asking for a raise but I have decided to wait until I have a year done and then hit them for a 4k raise. I don’t think I'm going over the top as a lot of my mates out of college are on more then what I'm on and also get benefits like pensions, car, phone laptop, gym, VHI and a masters paid for none of which I am getting! Thinking about it as I write this I might ask for a raise! Any views?

in my experience 6 month review are usually to determine if they are going to keep you or let you go. you may get a small increase. It's usually the 1 year review that your salary is adjusted. but it can be different for different companies.

Yea I'd imagine that the company I'm with are like that. No 6 month review so I presume their going to keep me on! I will wait for the one year is up and then getting talking about an increase!

I don't have a date yet for my review but it's being set up so I'll let you know how I get on...

You are right, it is a 'will we keep him or not' review but it is also a pay review :)

I had friends who did the same - one guy was on 10k more than me with great benefits - however very difficult job and he's very stressed :)

the original pay range is no longer valid. when a job is advertised at say €25-30k it is depending on experience plus other factors. so if you take the job at say €26k, that doesnt mean there is an extra €4k on offer at a later stage. once you have taken the €26k that is it, the original pay range no longer exists. you accepted the job at €26k and that is how much the job paid, so there isnt an extra €4k to ask for.

personally i would do a list of all the work you have done to date and all the procedures you have implemented. dont throw something your boss praised you on back in his face, becuase he wont praise you again then. in other words where you boss told you that you cut down on the long term work, dont throw it back at him in the same way he said it to you. because then it is like you are using it against him, and he wont be too quick to say positive things to you in future. re-phrase it as if it is a task that you completed.

let us know how you got on.
