Yikes, sounds sore - hope it gets better soon.
I played from 8 pm to 2:30 am last saturday night/sun morning, and the swellings just gone down on my strumming hand in the last couple of days!! I wont be doing that to myself again, I really missed the guitar during the week.:D

That's a good point actually - throw it in an open D tuning, slide on your index finger and off ya go :)

It's ****ty to get injuries (I've had a few) that take you out of music for a while but may as well make the most of it!

I've recently injured my wrist, picking hand has gone to hell. :(

I do hope I'll be back in guitar playing shape soon though.

I broke my left arm badly when I was 11, before I ever thought of playing, and did a lot of nerve damage. I had to get six months of electrolysis to get my fingers to move again. I don't really have a lot of feeling in my little and ring fingers and I'll get to a certain level of playing but never beyond that, due to the injury. It can be frustrating knowing there's a lot I'll never be able to do, but you can adapt how you play and what you play. As mentioned, Tony Iommi invented an entire genre without fingertips on his fretting hand and Django Reinhart was no slouch either. Chris Poland, unbelievable guitarist, has a damaged tendon but he's still one of the most amazing guitarists I can think of.

There's still a lot you can do while you're waiting for the damge to heal up, slide being a great example. Now is a great time to try things you wouldn't do if your hand was in tip-top shape, this could be the time you really blossom as a player in preparation for when your hand heals. Keep your chin up and look at it as an enforced technique experimentation period. :)

He was the first guitarist I thought about when I opened the thread. He had amazing playing technique.

A mate of might lost the tips of his index and middle finger, down to the first knuckle, on his fretting hand a couple of weeks ago. He's determined not to let it stop him from playing. He's already trying to make some form of tips for them. Hope yer hand recovers well man.

Ouch that sounds painful. Best of luck to your friend!

The only hand-related injuries that I have suffered were thankfully a lot more trivial. Years ago while working on a meat counter I was cleaning up when I managed to slip on the wet floor. I put out my hand to steady myself but unfortunately I slammed the palm of my left hand down onto the counter top where I had left out an open industrial-sized roll of tinfoil. Once I had separated my hand from the teeth of the metal edge of the box and bound up my hand I then had to clean up the mess :(. That was quite nauseating to say the least!

I've also had various incidents playing football and trapping my hand in doors over the years but thankfully everything is still okay. *touch wood*

    Tough break man.

I've had a few weeks off here and there with tendonitis but so far my fingers are in good enough shape. Damaged the little finger on my left hand before I started playing so it is a lot slower and weaker than the other fingers, but excessive typing and forcing myself to use it is paying off over time.

Dave Mustaine is another player that was almost ruled out for good. Dunno how he recovered, but at one stage it was "you'll never play again"!!
